The Russian city of Sochi has quietly hired a private company to carry out a mass cull of its stray dogs ahead of the upcoming Winter Olympics. Alexei Sorokin, director general of Basya Services, said that his company is involved in what he described as the “catching and disposing” of dogs. Sorokin refused to specify whether they shoot or poison dogs or say where they take the carcasses. The revelation comes after Sochi city hall last year publicly dropped plans to dispose of more than 2,000 dogs and cats after outrage from animal rights groups.

From the Arctic cold to the scorching Grand Canyon desert, Casey goes to learn how these animals adapt and survive in their sometimes brutal and unforgiving ecosystems. It’s just the next “job” of this adventurer and his wingman to a 900-pound grizzly bear best friend named Brutus. Jeff discusses his trip to Ohio State University Center of Veterinary Medicine to get a diagnosis and treatment for the seizures that Butch started having in January. Late stage seizures like the ones he has been having are not good and are generally caused by one of three things, a lesion on his skull from hitting his head, idiopathic epilepsy, or a brain tumor. As none of these are desirable for any pet, epilepsy is treatable and pets can live normal happy lives for many years. Listen in for the results.

Hour 2 – California’s Game Wardens are back for a second season of Wild Justice on the National Geographic Channel Sunday at 10pm ET/PT— and they’re goal is to better explain the difference between hunters and poachers. Patrick Foy is a Game Warden at the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) stationed in Sacramento and he joins Jeff to discuss how he goes on regular patrol for game in season in the Sacramento region such as deer, waterfowl, doves, salmon, sturgeon, and many others.  Jeff discusses that fact that although Butch came from a decent lineage he still has genetic disorders. His newly found brain tumor may or may not be a result of this. Now, how this relates to the poor breeding of dogs that are held captive in many puppy mills around the countryis obvious. You should do as much research as you possibly can before buying a purebred puppy. Rely on reputable breeders and breed rescue groups for your information on a specific breed or you can easily end up with a heartbreaking situation where a puppy only lives a few years then develops a life ending situation. The Chicken Jerky fight continues and it could be tied to 3 major brands, listen in to the news and announcements for more info. Jeff makes Butch’s Jerky from meat purchased at his local grocierie store…this is the only way to be sure your pet is getting safe jerky…and it’s so easy to do there is no reason not to do it yourself.

I have been at the Ohio State University Center of Veterinary Medicine the past week to have a complete neurological work up and MRI done to get to the bottom of Butch’s seizures. So I have been out of the studio in order to get a full diagnosis and treatment for Butch. Butch is 7 yrs and 7 months old which is roughly 53 in human terms. Late stage seizures like the ones he has been having are not good and are generally caused by one of three things, a lesion of some kind, idiopathic epilepsy, or a brain tumor. As none of these are desirable for any pet epilepsy is treatable and pets can live normal happy lives for many years. As he has been in ideal health and in great shape his whole life the most likely of these is a brain tumor causing his seizures, unfortunately.
Ohio State University is one of the top Veterinary hospitals in the country and Dr. Ronaldo de Costa of the Veterinary Neurology Department has been monitoring the procedures and tests Butch is going through at the facility and his current treatment. They Serve as a consortium to unite programs that employ detection dogs to benefit society throughout the US and around the world. Collect and analyzes genetic, behavioral and physical data; and integrates the latest scientific information in order to optimize the success and well-being of detection dogs. Prepare for future demands and facilitate research by developing a detection dog breeding/training program that will implement, test, and disseminate the knowledge gained. Dr. Patrick Mahaney, our vet to the stars also joins Jeff and as an Alumni Of The University of Pennsylvania (not Penn State), he weighs in on the program and actually he was a student of hers a few years ago! This week – Hour 1 – Ever Heard of “Dogtor J?” Well his name is Dr. John B Symes and he is a well known Veterinarian from Alabama that has done extensive research on some of the causes of seizures in pets. Now Butch has been doing pretty well over the last couple of weeks since his seizure episode, so Jeff have been doing more research on what to be feeding him on a more natural diet. He wants to be sure that he is getting all of the right things in his diet and start doing away with the bad! From over ten years of medical and nutritional research Dr. John B. Symes or “Dogtor J” developed “The G.A.R.D.” an elimination diet for the treatment of most conditions afflicting man and his four-legged companions. Dogtor J joins Jeff to talk about how he came up with this diet, what he recommends feeding out Cats and Dogs, and answers Jeff’s big question, “If I prepare food for Butch on my own how can I be sure he is getting what he needs?” You’ll be surprised to know those folks who are feeding table scraps are not too far from the right answer as long as there is not too much sodium (salt) or things they shouldn’t be eating like onion/garlic, grapes raisins …the usual suspects. How about a Hurricane like Katrina or a tornado that rips through destroying your city. How about a power outage that lasts for days or weeks. Well these are all things that can happen, they are not funny nor is it Crazy to be prepared for them. Tim Reynolds talks with Jeff about Doomsday Prepping and also about a great invention that he came up with called the “Crovel.” Dr. Patrick Mahaney our Vet to the Stars in Hollywood checks in with Jeff to catch up on some of the things he has been up to and discusses the mid-winter safety tips for pets.
