This week – Hour 1 – National Geographic’s award winning series Alaska State Troopers is now in it’s third season. Dan Stern, writer and executive producer of the series joins Jeff to talk about what it is like spending a whole year in Alaska to film the series and some of the things that they had to deal with. Personally, Jeff doesn’t know if he could handle the “midnight sun” in Alaska in the summer time! They also talk about some of the upcoming episodes. Dr. Shelly Rubin is past president of the American Heartworm Society and used to be Oprah’s choice for a veterinarian before she moved to California to run her network. He stops by to talk a bit about flea, tick, heartworm preventatives and remedies. After a recent tv news report by Cleveland’s ABC affiliate, that over-the-counter remedies have caused serious illness and death to some pets, Jeff wants to dig into this possibility with Dr. Rubin.
Hour 2
Vickie Fisher is the President of The International Cat Association and she joins Jeff to talk about their involvement in the “Meet The Breeds” show at the Javits Center in New York City in November. This is a great function for the whole family because there are not only cats but the AKC is also involved and so there are many breeds of dogs exhibited also! Dogs and Cats under the same roof is sure to be and exciting time and Vickie tell us about it! Big Cat Week Starts on December 11th on Nat Geo Wild.  Hour 1-National Geographic is introducing a new web site for kids and reptile expert and host of NatGeo Wild’s “Dangerous Encounters” Brady Barr joins Jeff to talk about it. A fun site for kids, which is a great idea to keep them busy over the holidays, there are hours of fun that can be had here! A game that they can play for free with interactive video and other fun items. Best of all there is a section for parents to help keep tabs on the game their children are playing. It’s National Geographic so you know it’s a good site! Jeff also gives a complete run down on the six new breeds that will make their TV debut on the National Dog Show presented by Purina on NBC on Thanksgiving Day. Jeff talks about the specific breeds and gives summary descriptions on each.This is the fourth year that Jeff had covered the event so he also talks a bit out the procedures that the AKC has in place to register new breed standards and a little bit about how a dog show competition is defined.

Author Alison Pace who is a great friend of the My Buddy Butch Show stops buy to talk about her great news that her book “Pug Hill” was released to mass market paperback. She’ll explain what that means and talk about the other outstanding books that she has written. If you are interested in writing you have to read one of Alison’s books…she teaches writing in New York so she knows more than a little bit about writing! Gary Nice joins Jeff from the Canine Cancer Foundation in Phoenix. They have chapters around the country and are doing great work. Unless you have lost a pet to cancer or have lost a pet for any reason you will understand what this research means to many people. Not only that but the same cancers that attack us humans also attack dogs and the research being done benefits humans as much as it does dogs! Dogs rescue humans yet again….News and announcements – Report from an ABC-TV affiliate in Cleveland Ohio reports that spot on flea/tick preventative are causing serious illnesses and even death to pets in some cases. Reports from the EPA since 2009 prompted an investigation and a warning in 2010. Reminder – feed your pets pet food NOT human food or table scraps around the upcoming holidays.

This week – Jennifer Shryock of Dogs & Storks joins us to talk about the importance of bringing a new baby into the home with a dog. This is the first national program that prepares families with dogs for a new life with a baby. Jeff is a big supporter of this program because it can prevent many unpleasant situations including surrendering a dog to already overcrowded rescue shelters! Also Joplin Mo. Human Society has has one of the toughest times an organization like this can possibly have. We have been following the plight of Joplin since the tornado and storms in May and now Jeff talks with Karen Aquino the executive director of the Jopline Humane Society to see what is currently happening there as well as some of the amazing stories that have happened. Gina is always fun to talk to and she lets us in on the latest states to join the fray. Dr. Jennifer Jellison is back with us to speak about a different angle on the “moist” weather we’ve had and the rabid insect population that is exploding! What she is seeing in her practice and how to combat the insects. Dick Rolfe, CEO of the Dove Foundation continues the discussion on movies released this summer. Dating back to the 1920’s this prestigious show was started by an individual from one of America’s richest and most famous families, the Rockefellers. Listen to our show this week as Wayne talks about how he discovered the memorabilia that led him to revive this historical dog show. Since this show happens only every 5 years we are going to be covering it every couple of months or so to bring you updates in anticipation of the big event on October 7, 2010…and we will be there also! Bringing Animals Out of Crisis and into Care!

Nicole Forsyth CEO of United Animal Nations joins us from Sacramento California to talk about thier efforts in helping to save animals of all types around the country. Founded in 1987, United Animal Nations (UAN) focuses on bringing animals out of crisis and strengthening the bond between people and animals through a variety of programs, including emergency sheltering, disaster relief services, financial assistance and education.  Learn more from my interview with Nicole on this week’s show.

 This week Dr. Patrick talks about the Pet sales ban in West Hollywood that prohibits the sale of pets in Pet Stores in that area. Helping to curb the spread of “Puppy Mill” dogs that are often not well taken care of not to mention sick which can end up costing the new owners hundreds if not thousands of dollars to take care of in addition to the heartbreak of watching the animal suffer and in many cases die or have to be euthanized. Perhaps this type of legislation will be sweeping the country before you know it forcing people to seek out rescue animals as well as reputable breeders for a happy healthy new family member.

I had a great time in California attending the Dog show and met some really nice people. This is quite an event! Being in California the weather is usually not a factor, but this year for the 9th annual show they had to deal with a bit of rain and cooler temps. Being from Ohio 55 degrees and rainy is like summer weather for me in December anyway. Never-the-less the show must go on and go on it did. We play a few of the interviews from entrants and also Jason Taylor of Eukanuba who is in charge of the event.

Erin Wanner has been producer ast Animal Planet for a few years now and she is the producer for the AKC Eukanuba ChampionShip that will air on “The Night Before The Superbowl!” February 6th. Erin was nice enough to take time out of her schedule to give us a call and talk to us about what it takes to get a dog show as big as this one ready to be on TV!. She also gives a few words of advice for young people who want to get into producing!

Kyla Duffy joins us to talk about “Happy Tails Books” in Colorado and the work they are doing donating to rescues around the country from the sales of their books. Beginning in Spring of 2009 they have already been able to donate over $3000 to help shelters find homes for worthy pets! I had the pleasure of working with Tina putting this album together and producing this project. Submitted for Grammy consideration last year, this collection of Classical Christmas songs shows not only Tina’s range and expertise as a vocalist but also her technical ability to get the tracks recorded! Tina is featured on two other Christmas CD’s where she is in the company of superstars such as Huey Lewis, Stephen Bishop, and Dennis DeYoung. Even William Shatner did a track. I am very proud of Tina as she also produced another CD herself, learning the steps that we took on the production of the first one. Guideposts Magazine has been around longer than I have been alive and is an American Staple. I can remember seeing Guideposts sitting on the counter while growing up or on a table at my grandparents house! It was an honor to speak with Edward Grinnan about the magazine and how the millions of subscribers feel about their pets. As they take prayer requests and have “True Stories of Hope and Inspiration,” Edward talks about how many people write in requesting prayers for their pets! Guideposts answered the call in great fashion with their “Prayers For Pets” section on Guideposts.com. Edward also shares with us how his wife’s dog Rudy actually introduced them for the very first time before they were married! It was a pleasure to talk with Edward because the work they are doing at Guideposts is truly blessed!

RESCUE SHELTER OF THE WEEK 

Geauga Humane Society Rescue Village in Ohio

Hope Brustein joined us from the Geauga Humane Society in Ohio. Now since this is a “Humane Society” they recue all different types of abused and homeless animals, rahabilitate and care for them until they can find them a forever home. Dogs, cats, ducks, pigs, and donkeys can be found at this terrific facility along with a large network of workers and volunteers who care deeply about saving these animals and see to it that they get a chance to live a happy, healthy life. Listen in as Hope tells us more about the wrok they are doing and how you can adopt!

Vet to the Stars!

We are heading into the winter months now and it is starting to get COLD much sooner than usual here in Ohio. We have had a few fires in the area that have left some pets seriously injured from burns and smoke inhalation. It is very improtant to remember fire safety now and with all of the wild fires in California Dr. Patrick is no stranger to seeing pets in agony because of fire. We discuss safety issues and also some of the effects you and your pet can suffer from when trapped in a fire. PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!!!

With all of the talk about the “Swine Flu” or the “H1N1 Virus” Dr. Patrick also offered information on if this will affect your pets. Check out his article here!
