Did you know that 5500 are dogs euthanized every day ….yes every day in the USA? Mark Barone and Marina Dervan,  have created ‘An Act of Dog’ which is  Non-Profit organization for the sole purpose of protecting the lives of our beloved Companions, by ensuring that all of America’s Shelters adopt the proven and successful lifesaving model. Mark has begun painting portraits of shelter dogs of which some have already been euthanized and some have been rescued. He will paint 5500 dogs, the same number of that are euthanized in one day as a tribute and to raise money for saving these dogs and other animals in shelters from being euthanized. Hour 2

The Cat Fanciers Association held there annual Great Lakes Regional Cat Show and competition last week in Ohio. Jeff had the opportunity for the first time in his life to attend a cat show and had a great time. This is a great outing for the whole family. Seth Baugh was his tour guide and really gave him an education on the different breeds and how the show actually works. It’s very different from a dog show but just as interesting to see the many different breeds being judged! Interviews from the cat show and Jeff gives his take on the different breeds. There are cat shows going on all over the country every weekend so get out and check it out if you like cats or are thinking of getting a cat. These folks are good people and ou won’t find anyone more knowledgable. This week – Hour 1: This week Jeff talks to Senior Editor of Sports Illustrated Jim Gorant about his New York Times Best Seller “The Lost Dogs – The Michael Vick Dogs – A tale of Rescue and Redemption” This is an outstanding book written by someone who knows how to do it! The story is about the Michael Vick Dog Fighting incident and now that Vick has signed a $40 Million deal, many people are seriously angry about it. Jim, a serious dog lover, gives us a little perspective on the subject. This is not something that is going to go away any time soon… Stay tuned. Cassie of “OSCAR” One Step Closer Animal Rescue in New Jersey joins us for the Rescue of the week segment to talk about Hurricane Irene and how lucky they were to get through it and some of the activities they have going on for fund raising and adoption. Heard of the United Kennel Club? This club registers breeds in all 50 states and 26 countries! Listen in to find out more about them and a great event that Jeff (and maybe Butch will be attending.

Hour2: Pet Expert and safety advocate Denise Fleck of Sunnydogink.com joins Jeff to catch up on some things you may want to consider now that the kids are back in school. Fido probably doesn’t have much to do but sit around and wait for them to come home so there are some things you can do to help pass the time and brush up on some skills…for both of you! Dr. Patrick Mahaney , our Vet to the Stars, Joins us for the Vet Topic of the week – “University study finds that second hand smoke is found to produce tumors in pets.” You have to hear this one and if you smoke…if you don’t quit, at least go outside. Those who are lonely for many reasons may obtain pets to fill the void. Great discussion on this topic.   Major airline carriers have raised prices on pet flight - one has actually raised its rate to $250 ONE WAY! It’s clear they don’t want people taking pets on planes. Fatality rate among pets in flight has risen drastically over the last two years.

Mr. Wayne Ferguson has been involved with dog shows for over 40 years. It would be difficult to find someone that knows more than he does about the stucture of a dog show and even dogs themselves. Wayne Fergusen is the President and Show Chair of the Morris & Essex Kennel Club Dog Show which is steeped in history. Dating back to the 1920’s this prestigious show was started by an individual from one of America’s richest and most famous families, the Rockefellers. Listen to our show this week as Wayne talks about how he discovered the memorabilia that led him to revive this historical dog show. Since this show happens only every 5 years we are going to be covering it every couple of months or so to bring you updates in anticipation of the big event on October 7, 2010…and we will be there also! Joel used to be a Killer Whale trainer at Sea World and he was kind enough to join us this week to talk a little bit about his experience with these enormous sea mammels and the tragic death of a trainer at Sea world of Orlando this week. These animals are not to be taken lightly. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the trainer that parished.

Bringing Animals Out of Crisis and into Care!

Nicole Forsyth CEO of United Animal Nations joins us from Sacramento California to talk about thier efforts in helping to save animals of all types around the country. Founded in 1987, United Animal Nations (UAN) focuses on bringing animals out of crisis and strengthening the bond between people and animals through a variety of programs, including emergency sheltering, disaster relief services, financial assistance and education.  Learn more from my interview with Nicole on this week’s show.

VET TOPIC OF THE WEEK

 This week Dr. Patrick talks about the Pet sales ban in West Hollywood that prohibits the sale of pets in Pet Stores in that area. Helping to curb the spread of “Puppy Mill” dogs that are often not well taken care of not to mention sick which can end up costing the new owners hundreds if not thousands of dollars to take care of in addition to the heartbreak of watching the animal suffer and in many cases die or have to be euthanized. Perhaps this type of legislation will be sweeping the country before you know it forcing people to seek out rescue animals as well as reputable breeders for a happy healthy new family member.
