"8 State Hurricane Kate" and the New "Not Without My Dog"

Jenny Pavlovic was with us in the past to talk about her award winning book “8 State Kate” which was the story of a cattle dog that she rescued during her time spent helping the people and animals during the Hurrcane Katrina disaster back in 2005. Since that time Jenny has compiled an outstanding book titled “Not Without My Dog” which I was honored to be asked to blurb. This book gives you a complete page by page listing of the information you need to collect and keep in one place so you can quickly grab it and run in the event of a disaster around your city. I recommend it highly as how many of us really have a family emergency plan? Jenny makes it easy to know what exact information you will need for yourself and family and of course your furry family member!

Dr. Jo-Anne Dixon DVM is the Executive Director and the Medical Director for the shelter and it is always great to talk with her. They are working on a program for “Pit Bulls” to earn their AKC Canine Good Citizen Certification. THe stigma surrounding these dogs makes it very difficult for people to realize that they are very adoptable and need only the proper training to know how to behave. I’ve said  it many times “It’s not the dog, it’s the owner!” The Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley promotes companion animal welfare by providing temporary shelter for homeless pets, adopting them to qualified homes, and reducing animal abuse, neglect, and overpopulation through community education and spay/neuter services. Dr. Patrick joins us to talk about the H1N1 and the progress made curtailing this flu. It doesn’t appear that it is going to have the impact originally thought but it will probably be included in the 2010 flu shots given to humans. Seems our pets might be safe!

This show was wall to wall information! Janine Franceschi joined us from PAW – Pet Friendly Accomodations Worldwide at Luxurypaw.com. Janine and I met in New York during the Westminster weekend and she was a delight to talk to then and now. You know…we had such a great time talking I completely forgot to have her discuss her radio show on Pet Life Radio! She even had me on her show a couple of weeks ago! You have to check out her blog because she is always updating it with new hotels and great information. If you are taking a trip you have to check in with PAW first to see which hotels will take your dog. Janine’s site is the only one that I know of that has the weight of your dog in the search and they only show 4 STAR HOTELS. Susie Keel of Florida joins us to talk about this most misunderstood breed. This is a great breed and I, for one am a big fan! Once my “schedule” changes (notice I didn’t say ’slows down!’ Ha!) I will definitely be looking to adopt one of these dogs. It is a perfect size and like any dog, if treated with love and kindness, it will love you right back!
