Hour 1 – Jeff ran across a great new book that just may interest the whole family. Taking no political sides on the matter, Jeff was interested that many of the programs being debated during the 2012 election were started during the Presidency of Lyndon Baines Johnson – Medicare, Head Start, the Voting Rights Act of 1964 and PBS & NPR were all signed into law by LBJ. Joining Jeff is Mark Updegrove, who is a presidential historian and the director of the LBJ Presidential Library in Austin, Texas and has a new book being published, INDOMITABLE WILL: LBJ in the Presidency (Crown; March 13, 2012), that profiles the programs that have changed our world and the future of which are being debated in this election. As a presidential historian, Updegrove be on with local party officials or alone to discuss – how these programs have changed our world and what will happen and who will be affected if these programs are changed or taken away?Is Garlic good for your pet….well, can you tell me exactly why you would feed garlic to your pet? Some holistic vets sayit will keep the fleas and tics away along with other internal benefits. Garlic a cousin of the Onion contains Thiosulphate which is a substance known to be very Toxic to Dogs, cats and horses. By its size alone the amounts are much smaller than an onion yet the substance is nonetheless toxic and there is an enormous fight for both sides of this issue. Some folks use topical products, tablets, or even shots to keep away fleas and ticks others use natural remedies like Garlic to do the same thing. The Natural pet people say the pharmaceutical remedies are toxic for your pet. I guess the question is do you want to kill your pet the medicinal way or the natural way. This week – Hour 1 – Have you seen the movie “Secretariat” yet. Well this Disney movie naturally documents what many call the greatest race horse of all time. However, would he have been as great if he did not have an arch rival pushing him? “Sham – Great Was Second Best” is a book by Phil Dandrea and Phil joins Jeff this week to talk about the research he did on this other great horse that many have overlooked over the years. Also, Dr. Shelly Rubin stops by for the Vet Topic of the week. Seeing all the dogs in close proximity at the National Dog show, Jeff questions what precautions are needed to make sure disease does not spread between dogs. Pet owners taking pets to training or boarding need to know about this. Dr. Rubin also talks more about the research going into a possible resistant strain of heartworm. Now this is only research, and some of the things that they are looking into include pets that have tested positive even though they have been given preventative medication. Was it administered properly by the owners or is this a new type that we should be aware of? Also news and announcements…Butch Loves Chicken jerky but now there has been a problem reported with jerky imported from….guess where…

Hour 2 – It’s catch up time! Jeff spends time after falling way behind on emails, products and interviews! The National Dog Show Presented by Purina was this past week on Thanksgiving day. Jeff attended the event and has a few interviews and had a quick chat with Mary Carillo, David Frei, and John O’Hurley who was actually opening on Broadway in the show “Chicago.” This (and any pets show) is always a great event for the whole family and being the 10 year anniversary it did not disappoint. You will also meet a 10 year old brand new junior handler and hear how she got involved with showing dogs. RECALLS – Do you have any idea how many recalls there have been in the last 4 years? About 80 Cat food brands, about 120 Dog food brands, 9 horse food brands and even a reptile food… Well Jeff goes on a rant about it! He bets that a brand of something that you give to your pet has been involved. Learn how to find ALL the brands that have been recalled.  Hour 1-National Geographic is introducing a new web site for kids and reptile expert and host of NatGeo Wild’s “Dangerous Encounters” Brady Barr joins Jeff to talk about it. A fun site for kids, which is a great idea to keep them busy over the holidays, there are hours of fun that can be had here! A game that they can play for free with interactive video and other fun items. Best of all there is a section for parents to help keep tabs on the game their children are playing. It’s National Geographic so you know it’s a good site! Jeff also gives a complete run down on the six new breeds that will make their TV debut on the National Dog Show presented by Purina on NBC on Thanksgiving Day. Jeff talks about the specific breeds and gives summary descriptions on each.This is the fourth year that Jeff had covered the event so he also talks a bit out the procedures that the AKC has in place to register new breed standards and a little bit about how a dog show competition is defined.

Author Alison Pace who is a great friend of the My Buddy Butch Show stops buy to talk about her great news that her book “Pug Hill” was released to mass market paperback. She’ll explain what that means and talk about the other outstanding books that she has written. If you are interested in writing you have to read one of Alison’s books…she teaches writing in New York so she knows more than a little bit about writing! Gary Nice joins Jeff from the Canine Cancer Foundation in Phoenix. They have chapters around the country and are doing great work. Unless you have lost a pet to cancer or have lost a pet for any reason you will understand what this research means to many people. Not only that but the same cancers that attack us humans also attack dogs and the research being done benefits humans as much as it does dogs! Dogs rescue humans yet again….News and announcements – Report from an ABC-TV affiliate in Cleveland Ohio reports that spot on flea/tick preventative are causing serious illnesses and even death to pets in some cases. Reports from the EPA since 2009 prompted an investigation and a warning in 2010. Reminder – feed your pets pet food NOT human food or table scraps around the upcoming holidays.

Carol Carprita of Woodside Pet Cemetary joins Jeff to discuss this issue and talk about how a Pet Cemetery operates (See Video Below). Pet Cemeteries are not something new that has just sprung up to take advantage of the pet industry boom…they have been around for many many years. Carol gives some tips on what to do when you are in that situation. Irene (and yes her name really is Irene…like Jeff’s mom!) of the Liberty Humane Society in Jersey City New Jersey joins Jeff for the Rescue of the Week Segment to talk about Hurricane Irene last week and how they are dealing with the destruction as well as how they helped the animals. You have to hear this she is very passionate about this topic and you will see…or rather hear! Bed Bugs have not gone away just be cause it summer and if you are traveling this summer you need to beware of your surroundings and how these little ‘buggers” can ride into your house on your pet! Jeff gives some tips on how to prevent infestation. 

Hour 2- Dr. Dawn Marcus MD, Professor, Neurologist and author of “The Power of Wagging Tails” joins Jeff to discuss the study that she conducted at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center regarding the effect of therapy dogs on pain management patients in the waiting room. We have all had to sit in a Doctor’s waiting room either sick or in pain. These folks, some having no hope of a cure, are there to try and live with their pain. Listen in to the surprising results of this study that Dr. Dawn wanted to announce on our show before it was released to the national medical journals. Dr. Patrick Mahaney our Vet to the stars stops by to talk about the tragic death of Amy Winehouse and the situation her pets are in now that she is gone. This week  – Shane Reynold – TV personality, writer, producer, camera man, and all around adventurer joins us to talk about his new series“Shane Untamed” on National Geographic’s NAT GEO WILD channel.

 He has travel the corners of the earth to put together a great episodic documentary. He’s out to experience a world of wild animals and wild spaces that most of us only dream of seeing and, along the way, explore the people and cultures that call these incredible, and often remote, places home.  Animal Control officers are ticketing owners of “vicious dogs” in cities around the country including Pit Bulls, and one of the “political” talk show hosts misinterpreted the San Francisco law banning Pet Sales in the City. We are also joined by “Frosting Fran” of the K9 Cakery and she will talk about baking for dogs and some of the items they have to offer in addition to the National Dog Party Day!  After the tornados, Joplin Mo. Humane Society needs some help with rescued animals. Are you getting married with your pet in the wedding party, well you have to listen to this show!

In the spirit of keeping our summer reading conversation going author Alison Pace joins us to talk about her new novel “A Pug’s Tale” which was released this month. Alison has been a friend of the show for a couple of years when her previous book “City Dog ” was released. Both Enjoyable reads for this summer! Karen Everhardt is the Executive director of Rainbow Meadows Equine Rescue and Retirement facility in Kansas. She joins us to talk about how this wonderful facility started and what it takes to keep and equine rescue and sanctuary going on a daily basis. Babesiosis… have you heard of this? Well it’s just one more of the infectious gifts that ticks can transmit to YOU AND YOUR PET! Dianne Sawyer reported on this on ABC News and Jeff takes a look at this disease that can actually be fatal for up to 20% of the people who catch this!

This week - Jeff Talks with Kathy Rebholz who is an academic advisor at Duquesne University about a new “Bachelor of Science Degree in Humane Leadership.” What can you do with this degree? Well, many in the non-profit pet world know exactly what to do and are doing it! Great Degree to pursue if you are looking to change careers or just find a new one! Also Dr. Pamela Fisher is a Holistic Veterinarian and she joins Jeff for the Vet Topic of the Week and The Rescue segment also to talk about therapeutic music tests that are going to be happening in shelters to see if the music really does soothe the animals that are in a bad situation. Author Jackie Sonnenberg joins Jeff to talk about her new book that was released in April “How to Raise Your New Puppy in a Cat Family.” Have a cat but want to bring a pup into the mix or do you want to adopt one of each? Well here is a great book for Summer Reading! Also we continue our series with Dr. Patrick Mahaney on his trip to Peru. Ever wonder what the local fare is at their “outdoor ” markets? Well he will tell us. Summer heat is upon us and Jeff gives a few reminders about the heat and some of the tell “tail” signs he has already seen with Butch on how the heat takes its toll. Horse Virus Herpes-1 spreading in western states closed Horse Competitions across the country to curtail this serious problem also Letter Carriers, and Meter readers for the Gas and Electric Companies are out and around our homes. Make sure your pet does not pose a threat to these great people trying to do their jobs!

Jenny Pavlovic was with us in the past to talk about her award winning book “8 State Kate” which was the story of a cattle dog that she rescued during her time spent helping the people and animals during the Hurrcane Katrina disaster back in 2005. Since that time Jenny has compiled an outstanding book titled “Not Without My Dog” which I was honored to be asked to blurb. This book gives you a complete page by page listing of the information you need to collect and keep in one place so you can quickly grab it and run in the event of a disaster around your city. I recommend it highly as how many of us really have a family emergency plan? Dr. Jo-Anne Dixon DVM is the Executive Director and the Medical Director for the shelter and it is always great to talk with her. They are working on a program for “Pit Bulls” to earn their AKC Canine Good Citizen Certification. THe stigma surrounding these dogs makes it very difficult for people to realize that they are very adoptable and need only the proper training to know how to behave. I’ve said  it many times “It’s not the dog, it’s the owner!” The Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley promotes companion animal welfare by providing temporary shelter for homeless pets, adopting them to qualified homes, and reducing animal abuse, neglect, and overpopulation through community education and spay/neuter services. Listen in on the latest happenings.

Dr. Patrick joins us to talk about the H1N1 and the progress made curtailing this flu. It doesn’t appear that it is going to have the impact originally thought but it will probably be included in the 2010 flu shots given to humans. Seems our pets might be safe!
