Hour 1 – Jeff continues the discussion with Certified Animal Behavior Consultant and award winning author Darlene Arden. Last time she talked about how to choose a vet for your pet. This time we talk about Pet Insurance and alternative methods of funding a pet’s health care. Can you believe it! We have enough trouble in this country with human health care and now we are even talking about pet health care! Did you get that new pet for Christmas? Do you know someone that did? Jeff gives a few tips on learning more about taking care of that pet. Do you have some New Year Resolutions? Ever heard of Wishbomb.com? It’s a goal setting web site that is actually a community of people that help support each other to reach their goals! Jeff’s New Year Resolution for Butch.

Hour 2 – Jeff looks at the year 2011 in review. Talks about some of the things that guests have taught us about animals and pets and also takes a look at some of the top news stories of 2011. Remember the mass bird die off that happened in Alabama, Arkansas, and Italy? How about the discovery of a new dinosaur that was found in a British natural history museum? Dr. Patrick mahaney joins Jeff to talk about “Mutt Health.” Jeff has discussed that Mutts or mixed breed Dogs can be healthier than a pure bred dog because they are pulling from a larger gene pool than a pure bred…well this might not be entirely true! Jeff also talks about some of the things coming up in 2012…Remember “Daniel” The Beagle Mix that survived being “gassed” in Alabama? Well the little fella has found a home in New Jersey after surviving the dog pound’s attempt at euthanizing him.

United Kennel Club

 World Coon Hound Championships held in Ohio by the UKC. Now, naturally Coon Hounds are hunting dogs but they can also make great family pets if you have the space for them to do what they love to do HUNT! They wouldn’t make a good city dog in the concrete jungle but a home with a good size lawn would be great for them. Jeff interviews the winner of the conformation and one of the judges of this fun event. Jeff also talks more about the UKC and gives their “Top 10 Breeds” list which includes the “American Pit Bull Terrier”…interesting and we’re glad to see their recognition of this much maligned dog. Darlene was with us for the release of her previous book “Rover Get Off Her Leg” and it was great catching up with her. She always has great advice and you will enjoy this book. Have you ever had your pet eat your illegal (or even legal for that matter) stash of drugs? Needless to say, or maybe not so needless is that it can make your pet seriously ill if not kill them. Dr. Partick Mahaney our Vet to the Stars in Hollywood joins us to talk about this issue that he has seen in his practice. Hurricane Irene has left more than a few rescues in bad shape and Jeff gives a run down on how you can help. News and announcements.

Hour2: Have you decided what you will do with your pet’s remains when it has passed away? Carol Carprita of Woodside Pet Cemetary joins Jeff to discuss this issue and talk about how a Pet Cemetery operates (See Video Below). Pet Cemeteries are not something new that has just sprung up to take advantage of the pet industry boom…they have been around for many many years. Carol gives some tips on what to do when you are in that situation. Irene (and yes her name really is Irene…like Jeff’s mom!) of the Liberty Humane Society in Jersey City New Jersey joins Jeff for the Rescue of the Week Segment to talk about Hurricane Irene last week and how they are dealing with the destruction as well as how they helped the animals. I can remember seeing Guideposts sitting on the counter while growing up or on a table at my grandparents house! It was an honor to speak with Edward Grinnan about the magazine and how the millions of subscribers feel about their pets. As they take prayer requests and have “True Stories of Hope and Inspiration,” Edward talks about how many people write in requesting prayers for their pets! Guideposts answered the call in great fashion with their “Prayers For Pets” section on Guideposts.com. Edward also shares with us how his wife’s dog Rudy actually introduced them for the very first time before they were married! It was a pleasure to talk with Edward because the work they are doing at Guideposts is truly blessed!

RESCUE SHELTER OF THE WEEK 

Geauga Humane Society Rescue Village in Ohio

Hope Brustein joined us from the Geauga Humane Society in Ohio. Now since this is a “Humane Society” they recue all different types of abused and homeless animals, rahabilitate and care for them until they can find them a forever home. Dogs, cats, ducks, pigs, and donkeys can be found at this terrific facility along with a large network of workers and volunteers who care deeply about saving these animals and see to it that they get a chance to live a happy, healthy life. Listen in as Hope tells us more about the wrok they are doing and how you can adopt!

Vet to the Stars!

We are heading into the winter months now and it is starting to get COLD much sooner than usual here in Ohio. We have had a few fires in the area that have left some pets seriously injured from burns and smoke inhalation. It is very improtant to remember fire safety now and with all of the wild fires in California Dr. Patrick is no stranger to seeing pets in agony because of fire. We discuss safety issues and also some of the effects you and your pet can suffer from when trapped in a fire. PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!!!

With all of the talk about the “Swine Flu” or the “H1N1 Virus” Dr. Patrick also offered information on if this will affect your pets. Check out his article here!

One very pleasant surprise was that David Frei, TV commentator for Westminster Dog Show and the NBC Purina National Dog Show called in for a visit. David is America’s foremost authority on all breeds of dogs and has been commentating for the Westminster Show for 20 years! He is truely a great guy to talk with and hope he will stop back again in the future. David shares his adventures with UNO the beagle, last years winner of the Westminster show, and other interesting facts. David also talks about Angel on a Leash, a great charity that champions working with therapy dogs in health care facilities, schools, rehab, extended care, correctional institutions, and crisis intervention.

We had Karen Judge of the Abandoned Pet Rescue of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida join us this week to talk about some of the rescue animals they have available and their procedures and policies to adopt. The organization has been in existence since 1996 and places many different types of animals every year. They do have many cats available and of course dogs, but they also have reptiles, small furry pets and other pets you may be interested in.
