Hour 1 – Dean Potter is one of the world’s most renowned rock climbers, adventurers, and nature enthusiasts who leaps off of cliffs and mountains while wearing a special “wingsuit” that enables him to soar like a bird before deploying a parachute to land. Now, Dean’s latest adventure, leaping off of Canada’s Mount Butte, a 9000 foot granite wall on the Pacific coast…after climbing it of course, and National Geographic Channel’s Explorer has covered it all. Dean joins Jeff to talk about this adventure and what he had to do to prepare for it. Also Dr. Patrick Mahaney joins Jeff to talk about a severely abused Pittbull and how it was nursed back to health but the story does not stop there! Now entities are fighting over the Intellectual property rights of the dog…where does the greed end UNBELIEVABLE! Also product review of Earth Heart Inc.’s “Canine Calm.”

Hour 2 – The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show was this past week on Monday and Tuesday. Cindy Vogels was chosen to be the “Best in Show” judge for this historic event and Jeff had the chance to speak to Cindy about this honor and her background at the annual press conference call. TV host and friend of the My Buddy Butch Show David Frei also attended the call and Jeff had the opportunity to speak with him also and stirred up an unintended hornet’s nest! Jeff gives a rundown on the finalists, the AKC definition of the seven groups, and a congrats to the winner!

This week – Hour 1 – Have you seen the movie “Secretariat” yet. Well this Disney movie naturally documents what many call the greatest race horse of all time. However, would he have been as great if he did not have an arch rival pushing him? “Sham – Great Was Second Best” is a book by Phil Dandrea and Phil joins Jeff this week to talk about the research he did on this other great horse that many have overlooked over the years. Also, Dr. Shelly Rubin stops by for the Vet Topic of the week. Seeing all the dogs in close proximity at the National Dog show, Jeff questions what precautions are needed to make sure disease does not spread between dogs. Pet owners taking pets to training or boarding need to know about this. Dr. Rubin also talks more about the research going into a possible resistant strain of heartworm. Now this is only research, and some of the things that they are looking into include pets that have tested positive even though they have been given preventative medication. Was it administered properly by the owners or is this a new type that we should be aware of? Also news and announcements…Butch Loves Chicken jerky but now there has been a problem reported with jerky imported from….guess where…

Hour 2 – It’s catch up time! Jeff spends time after falling way behind on emails, products and interviews! The National Dog Show Presented by Purina was this past week on Thanksgiving day. Jeff attended the event and has a few interviews and had a quick chat with Mary Carillo, David Frei, and John O’Hurley who was actually opening on Broadway in the show “Chicago.” This (and any pets show) is always a great event for the whole family and being the 10 year anniversary it did not disappoint. You will also meet a 10 year old brand new junior handler and hear how she got involved with showing dogs. RECALLS – Do you have any idea how many recalls there have been in the last 4 years? About 80 Cat food brands, about 120 Dog food brands, 9 horse food brands and even a reptile food… Well Jeff goes on a rant about it! He bets that a brand of something that you give to your pet has been involved. Learn how to find ALL the brands that have been recalled. Also, Family Movie update from the Hallmark Channel and Dove Foundation for the upcoming holidays. News and announcements.

Hour 1 – We are heading into “Televised” Dog Show season in November and to kick things off Jeff talks with David Frei who is the well known voice of the National Dog Show Presented by Purina on Thanksgiving Day on NBC right after the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parage. David is also the host of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show that is also on TV. Now, It just happens that David has a new book coming out where he writes about many of his encounters that he has had as a founder/member of the Angel on a Leash Foundation. Certified Animal Behavior Consultant and regular contributor to the My Buddy Butch Show, Darlene Arden joins Jeff to talk about the “Loyalty Factor” in pets. Stemming from the movie “HACHI” that Jeff started to discuss last week, Darlene lends some insight to the human animals bond…Think cats are loners? Well think again!. News And Announcements. Hour 2 – Have you ever heard of the “American Heartworm Society?” Well they have been around since the 70’s and suprisingly many people…even in the pet industry, have not heard of them. Do you know why it is important to give your pet the preventative year around? Well, Dr. Shelly Rubin tells us why and also clues us in on the other things that the preventative helps…well…prevent! Oh Yeah, by the way Dr. Shelly was also Oprah’s Vet before she moved to California to start her network OWN! Also Jeff discusses some halloween reminders about what your pets should NOT be eating. Joan Powers of the Colorado Pug Rescue is with us for our rescue segment. From the Westminster press conference Tom Bradley Westminster Show Chairman talks about the new breeds added by the AKC and how it impacts the dog show and also weighs in on Paulo Dondino the Italian judge. Update on Chico the Chihuahua that was attacked by a great Horned Owl in January.… Also News and announcements. Hour 2 – Jeff Catches up with Dr. Patrick Mahaney our “Vet To The Stars” from Hollywood California to discuss the veterinary perspective on dog shows. In addition Dr. Patrick Talks about his trip to NY and Westminster and the Veterinary facilities on site at the Garden. Also Cheryl from the Arizona Beagle Rescue and a quick link and discussion on how snake bites are becoming more of a problem. David Frei has been an expert analyst and commentator for the National Dog Show presented by Purina since the beginning 9 years ago. He has participated in every aspect of Dog shows over the years and is currently the Directoer of Communications for Westminster Kennel Club in New York City. David joins us this wee to talk about the upcoming Dog Show at the Philadelphia Expo Center which will be televised on Thanksgiving day right after the Macy’s Parade on NBC!

This week we discuss the happenings at Westminster. It was great to be in New York working again to see some old freinds and meet some new ones! This has always been a great event and this, being my second year, was no exception. As people are always willing to talk about their pets, few are as knowledgable as those that show their breeds at dog shows. I have learned much about many types of dogs from those who have owned them for many years and I talk to a few of those that I met this year at Madison Square Garden. Take a listen and maybe you might be interested in a couple day trip next year for Valentine’s Day!

Rescue a Doberman!

Donald Helfrisch joined us from the Doberman Rescue of New Mexico for our Rescue of the Week segment. Doberman’s are a great breed and were very well represented at Westminster this year but this misunderstood breed often gets a bad rap. Don, as a long time owner of Dobermans, gives us the inside scoop on what this type of dog is all about and also what their rescue organization is up to in New Mexico. This week Dr. Patrick talks about his first experience at the Westminster Dog Show. "8 State Hurricane Kate" and the New "Not Without My Dog"

Animal Allies of Texas!

Dusty Rainbolt runs the adoption center in Highland Village, Texas and the center is based out of Garland. They help both dogs and cats, but since Dusty is a cat expert I thought we would focus on helping the cats this week. Dusty also talks about the “Phoenix Project” which has recently been established in which AAT has partnered with the local battered womens shelter to provide temporary housing for pets of women seeking escape from an abusive relationship. RUFUS - 2006 Westminster Best in Show!

Sometimes my mouth speaks faster than my brain is working! Must be the snow or the activity getting ready for Westminster but at the top of the show, after reading through a list of four Barbara’s one Bonnie and one Betty, I mentioned Rufus’ owner as Barbara Babikian. It’s actually Barbara Bishop and as David and I were talking I realized my mistake when he correctly mention Barb Bishop as Rufus’ Owner! I suppose I should read my schedule rather than trying to procede by memory! Anyway my apologies for the mixup. BARBARA BISHOP was kind enough to drop by and talk to us as an owner of a past Westminster Winner of Best in Show - RUFUS! Barbara’s passion for the Bull terrier breed is quite evident as she discusses the breed standard and how the responsible breeders are trying to breed out the “sharpness” or “aggressiveness” of the breed. She also mentions how some feel that breeders are doing a disservice to the Bull Terrier breed by doing this and that RUFUS is not a good representative because he lacks this aggressive quality. Well, as a HUGE fan of the Bullys (and RUFUS) myself, I think that is absolutely ridiculous and completely undefensable so I’ll tell those who feel this way that when one of the noted “Aggressive” Bull Terriers wins as many Best in Breeds as RUFUS has, and then Westminster on top of it, only then will I entertain that thought! Obviously the judges of the most prestigious shows in the world feel that RUFUS’ temperment is perfect! Barbara has done it right and continues her love for the breed in the proper fashion and I salute her! Looking forward to seeing you and RUFUS in New York Barbara!

VET TOPIC OF THE WEEK

Vet to the Stars!

This week Dr. Patrick begins his discussion on his research into the past 5 breeds that have won “Best in Show” at Westminster and some of the breed specific ailments that can crop up. The responsible breeders that have dogs entered in Westminster are well aware of these particular problems that can arise in their respective breed and they do much testing and careful selection to try and breed issues out of their lines. These are the most knowledgable people on the planet with regard to their specific breed, which is why we always remind people to not purchase puppy mill dogs and to seek out a reputable rescue organization or breeder for the breed they are interested in. Search for the breed specific clubs which can refer you to a reputable rescue org or breeder in your area. You can do a quick Google Search and find the club for the breed you like or even go to the AKC website. These responsible breeders are more interested in the preservation of the breed standard and breeding healthy dogs than they are breeding for profit. They can help you with any questions you may have during the life of your new addition also!

Your Host David Frei of the Westminster Kennel Club-134th Annual Dog Show Feb. 15th and 16th.

David Frei has been a friend of the show since we covered our first dog show back in 2008. It’s always a pleasure to talk with David about his passion which is his love for Dogs. I learn something new from him everytime we speak and our conversation was no exception on this show. David has been involved with the show for 21 years and he shares with us the current business surrounding Westminster for this Tournament of Champions, The 2010 Westminster Kennel Club Dog show. The show is February 15th and 16th at Madison Square Garden and will be televised on USA Network and CNBC. I also want to send our sympathy to David and his wife as they lost two furry members of their family last summer Belle and Ty. As we all know, it’s difficult to lose a companion that has been with you for so many years. All the best from us at My Buddy Butch and see you in New York David!

ALL antifreeze is LETHAL to your Pet!

Sam Martin of Prestone joined us to talk about the safety aspects of antifreeze! We all have it, hopefully in the engine and not on the floor. Always check under your car for puddles and spills. DId you know that Prestone partnered with the ASPCA many years ago to get the word out to pet owners on the hazards of antifreeze? Last week in The My Buddy Butch Chronicle I wrote about changing the thermostat in my truck…what a mess I made with antifreeze on the floor! Cleaned it up pretty good so Butch wouldn’t get into itbut thought it was a good idea to throw the reminder out there. Sam is also a dog lover AND a rescuer! Thanks Sam for taking the time to be with us! I’ve been using Prestone for 30 years and always will!

Vet to the Stars!

This week Dr. Patrick talks to us about “Stump.” Stump was the 2009 Westminster Champion Sussex Spaniel. He was not only the oldest dog to ever win Westminster but did you know that he almost died a few years ago from a bizzar bacterial infection? Dr. Patrick talks about this and we also get into a long discussion on Vaccines. After a ripple I caused with my last “Chronicle” by mentioning booster shot vaccinations, I think it’s time to spend a little more time incvestigating this issue from the pro/con standpoint and make a decision on how I will handle Butch’s future!

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of those affected by the devastating earthquake in Haiti. As there are so many places that have aid stations and donation acceptance set up, it would be redundant for us to attempt such an activity. Please consider donating at a TRUSTED location such as your local Red Cross or inquire at your local radio or TV station for a good place to donate. Many service providers are making it easy to donate even by texting a message.

Well, now that our snow is starting to melt from a few days in the high 30’s the only memory I’ll have of it is a sprained back from too much shoveling! We’re not out of the woods yet as most of us here in Ohio and the Great Lake state know we could be dealing with the white stuff well into April or even May if conditions are right! I hope conditions are wrong! On with the show…

What would you do? Mine - a must see film!

Jessie Pullins did not expect to leave his long time friend and companion behind as he evacuated his large family in two vehicles to Houston as the water rose in New Orleans. 2 vehicles packed with too many people setting out on a 75 mile drive which took 12 hours to Houston would be too much for the large black lab. Leaving plenty of food and water for “JJ” Jessie knew he would return in 2 or 3 days to get JJ and reunite him with the family. It was not to be as authorities would not let anyone back in to their homes much less the city for months. Jessie discusses the heartwrenching ordeal he went through to find JJ and the legal issues that appeared during his quest.

Vet to the Stars!

This week Dr. Patrick talks to us about burns that your pet can recieve from many different locations. Butch has a tendancy to want to walk under my truck in the garage right after we get out. The exhaust pipe and radiator and surrounding metal is still scalding HOT. Now my truck rides pretty high and Butch can almost stand up underneath but if he does it in the wrong place he will cook the hair and skin where he touches the hot metal. Listen in to this discussion and also check out this article that Dr. Patrick sent to us from a great source “Veterinarypartner.com.” This article tells you what to do if your pet gets burned.

Also Dr. Patrick gives us a first hand look at a pet that suffered burns and how he is treating it. He has provided pictures but be warned they are graphic. Budda is a sweet little French Bulldog that suffered burns and is now going through treatments to help him heal.
