Hour 1 – Jeff continues the discussion with Certified Animal Behavior Consultant and award winning author Darlene Arden. Last time she talked about how to choose a vet for your pet. This time we talk about Pet Insurance and alternative methods of funding a pet’s health care. Can you believe it! We have enough trouble in this country with human health care and now we are even talking about pet health care! Did you get that new pet for Christmas? Do you know someone that did? Jeff gives a few tips on learning more about taking care of that pet. Do you have some New Year Resolutions? Ever heard of Wishbomb.com? It’s a goal setting web site that is actually a community of people that help support each other to reach their goals! Jeff’s New Year Resolution for Butch.

Hour 2 – Jeff looks at the year 2011 in review. Talks about some of the things that guests have taught us about animals and pets and also takes a look at some of the top news stories of 2011. Remember the mass bird die off that happened in Alabama, Arkansas, and Italy? How about the discovery of a new dinosaur that was found in a British natural history museum? Dr. Patrick mahaney joins Jeff to talk about “Mutt Health.” Jeff has discussed that Mutts or mixed breed Dogs can be healthier than a pure bred dog because they are pulling from a larger gene pool than a pure bred…well this might not be entirely true! Jeff also talks about some of the things coming up in 2012…Remember “Daniel” The Beagle Mix that survived being “gassed” in Alabama? Well the little fella has found a home in New Jersey after surviving the dog pound’s attempt at euthanizing him.

Jeff takes some time to relay a story from a fourth of July when Butch was only a couple of years old that almost ended in a tragic loss. He wants you to learn from his mistakes in not knowing as much as he thought he did about Butch. Dr. Jennifer Jellison has been on Regis and Kelly, The Today Show and Good Morning America on many occasions and now she is opening her new veterinary practice in Ohio. Jeff shares another summer story about Butch that proves a little training can definitely prevent a tragedy but it takes repetition and perseverance. This week  – Neurologist and professor at the University of Pittsburgh Dr. Dawn Marcus is back with us to talk about the release of her new book “The Power of Wagging Tails.” Therapy dogs are doing unbelievable work helping people cope with various ailments and now Dr. Marcus is doing a study of the use of therapy dogs in waiting rooms. She also talks about how your dog could possibly make a great therapy dog. Dr. Patrick Mahaney is with us for the 4th part of the series about his visit to Peru…exotic animals a three toed sloth. Dr. Marcus also hangs around to talk about how exposing your baby to pets can help them avoid allergies later in life. She has been involved with many studies regarding this. Buck a new film about the REAL Horse Whisperer is out this weekend. Pets are getting sick from Cicada Ingestion, and Dogs are dying of Parvovirus in our news segment.

Bringing Animals Out of Crisis and into Care!

 This week Dr. Patrick talks about the Pet sales ban in West Hollywood that prohibits the sale of pets in Pet Stores in that area. Helping to curb the spread of “Puppy Mill” dogs that are often not well taken care of not to mention sick which can end up costing the new owners hundreds if not thousands of dollars to take care of in addition to the heartbreak of watching the animal suffer and in many cases die or have to be euthanized. Perhaps this type of legislation will be sweeping the country before you know it forcing people to seek out rescue animals as well as reputable breeders for a happy healthy new family member.

It was an honor to speak with Edward Grinnan about the magazine and how the millions of subscribers feel about their pets. As they take prayer requests and have “True Stories of Hope and Inspiration,” Edward talks about how many people write in requesting prayers for their pets! Geauga Humane Society Rescue Village in Ohio

Hope Brustein joined us from the Geauga Humane Society in Ohio. Now since this is a “Humane Society” they recue all different types of abused and homeless animals, rahabilitate and care for them until they can find them a forever home. Dogs, cats, ducks, pigs, and donkeys can be found at this terrific facility along with a large network of workers and volunteers who care deeply about saving these animals and see to it that they get a chance to live a happy, healthy life. Listen in as Hope tells us more about the wrok they are doing and how you can adopt!

Vet to the Stars!

We are heading into the winter months now and it is starting to get COLD much sooner than usual here in Ohio. We have had a few fires in the area that have left some pets seriously injured from burns and smoke inhalation. It is very improtant to remember fire safety now and with all of the wild fires in California Dr. Patrick is no stranger to seeing pets in agony because of fire. We discuss safety issues and also some of the effects you and your pet can suffer from when trapped in a fire. PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!!!

With all of the talk about the “Swine Flu” or the “H1N1 Virus” Dr. Patrick also offered information on if this will affect your pets. Check out his article here!

I have to admit when I first saw another health book with a dog on the cover I thought, Ok…another “It’s great to jog or walk with your dog” book. As I began to read through some of the pages and learned more about Dr. Dawn Marcus I was hit with something so much more and literally drawn into the book. Dr. Marcus not only says that there are great benefits to walking or jogging with your dog but she actually tells you WHY from a medical standpoint. Dr. Marcus, being a board certified neurologist and professor at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, has experienced the success of the methodology that she teaches us in her book “Fit As Fido!” Each section begins with statements or questions from REAL PEOPLE that she introduces throughout the book. Taking it one step further she wants our dogs to be our “personal trainer!” After the discussion we had on the show…Well, I’m in! I’m going to let Butch be my personal trainer and be reporting my progress on it! Dr. Marcus has even included information, great references, and schedules as well as a place on her web site where you can download a walking log and exercise diary!

A great park system working for and with their community!

Anne-Mary McGrath joined us to talk about the work they have been doing for the community in Springfield Missouri. They have developed a couple of Dog Parks over the last few years that have been models for others to follow. The community loves them and uses them regularly and with the enrollement increasing they opened another one! They host great functions there such as a Dachshund Dash and Dog fest this month and I’m sure they will be having more this fall Listen to how they did it and where you can contact them to start your own “Dog Park” in your city! He is 13 years old now and she has been cooking for him for many years. She shares a recipe with us and also some other types of ingredients that she sometimes uses in foods. If you want to know how to cook for your pet, listen to those that have been doing it a long time! Helen and Raja have a great web site and she sometimes posts various recipes that you can try to cook for your pet. I like to cruise around the site to see what she has been up to. Pet Expert Charlotte Reed

As I began my journey last year of having the book released and starting the radio show, I had no idea of the things I would be doing or the people I would be meeting. In the first few years of having Butch I had met so many nice people and pet owners that I had a pretty good feeling about the direction I was headed, but being a music producer I was a bit aprehensive based on my experience with people in “the business.” Imagine my pleasant suprise last fall when I recieved a phone call from Charlotte Reed effectively welcoming me into the fold. Charlotte put together the Pet Writer’s Conference in New York that I had signed up for and was calling me to say “Hi” and let me know that if I had any questions not to hesitate to let her know! After meeting her las February I learned that she is as delightful in person as she is on the air! Charlotte is a Pet Expert, an author (Miss Fido Manners Complete Book of Dog Etiquette), one of the co-founders of the Metropolitan Dog Club of New York, and an expert on pet products of all kinds! Listen in on our conversation about her many years of experience with pets, pet products and her current gig as the spokesperson for Arm & Hammer Pet Products!

Over the years I have spent much time in Florida visiting relatives and then my parents as they wintered there from Ohio. I got to know Miami and especially the Ft. Lauderdale are very well and enjoyed every bit of it! I love Florida and as I get older hope to make that the winter location for MBB Radio! OK, enough of my commentary…Sara Schlossman of Sun Shine Airedalers of Florida was kind enough to join us from sunny Florida…well it was storming during our chat…but still Florida none-the-less! In Florida and want an Airedale? …Then you have to check out our conversation about the breed and how you can adopt from Sara and this great Airedale organization!

As you know by reading my book, I have done a lot of studying on how to take the best care of Butch possible. It never fails that Dr. Donna teaches me something new almost every week. She loves our pets almost as much as we do and has devoted her life to the best care possible for them. Dr. Donna Spector helps me through a problem that Butch has had with his annual shots. Parvo, Distemper shots seem to cause Butch some problems. Is he allergic to the shots? Is your pet allergic to shots? Listen to Dr. Donna walk me through the need for these shots and help me understand the dosages, and some testing that can be done to see if he even needs them annually… not to mention what I can do if we find that Butch is actually allergic to the shots and other important information!
