This week – Hour 1 – Have you seen the movie “Secretariat” yet. Well this Disney movie naturally documents what many call the greatest race horse of all time. However, would he have been as great if he did not have an arch rival pushing him? “Sham – Great Was Second Best” is a book by Phil Dandrea and Phil joins Jeff this week to talk about the research he did on this other great horse that many have overlooked over the years. Also, Dr. Shelly Rubin stops by for the Vet Topic of the week. Seeing all the dogs in close proximity at the National Dog show, Jeff questions what precautions are needed to make sure disease does not spread between dogs. Pet owners taking pets to training or boarding need to know about this. Dr. Rubin also talks more about the research going into a possible resistant strain of heartworm. Now this is only research, and some of the things that they are looking into include pets that have tested positive even though they have been given preventative medication. Was it administered properly by the owners or is this a new type that we should be aware of? Also news and announcements…Butch Loves Chicken jerky but now there has been a problem reported with jerky imported from….guess where…

Hour 2 – It’s catch up time! Jeff spends time after falling way behind on emails, products and interviews! The National Dog Show Presented by Purina was this past week on Thanksgiving day. Jeff attended the event and has a few interviews and had a quick chat with Mary Carillo, David Frei, and John O’Hurley who was actually opening on Broadway in the show “Chicago.” This (and any pets show) is always a great event for the whole family and being the 10 year anniversary it did not disappoint. You will also meet a 10 year old brand new junior handler and hear how she got involved with showing dogs. RECALLS – Do you have any idea how many recalls there have been in the last 4 years? About 80 Cat food brands, about 120 Dog food brands, 9 horse food brands and even a reptile food… Well Jeff goes on a rant about it! He bets that a brand of something that you give to your pet has been involved. Learn how to find ALL the brands that have been recalled. Also, Family Movie update from the Hallmark Channel and Dove Foundation for the upcoming holidays. News and announcements.

With the movie Apollo 18 opening last week Jeff was excited to have Stanton Friedman on the show to talk about UFO’s and the movie. EVERYONE who has watched almost any show on TV regarding UFO research knows who nuclear physicist Stan Friedman is. He was actually the only civilian researcher called in to investigate the Roswell incident. Very interesting man and discussion. Ellen Taylor of the Chesapeake Humane Society joins Jeff for the rescue of the week segment to talk about how they came through the hurricane Irene storm and what they and surrounding communities have to deal with afterward. News & Announcements…ever want to see your pet talk? There is a new web site that will allow you to do just that!

Dave Vigil, President of Snaptracs, Inc. in California, joins Jeff to talk about a new GPS tracking device called TAGG that can not only keep track of your pet on-line and on the Web but it can also text or email you to let you know that your pet has gone outside the designated area that YOU define. Sounds like a great product that Butch needs to test out and review! Part 2 of the interview with Stan Friedman about the movie Apollo 18 and the conspiricy theory surrounding it. This week – Hour 1: Darlene Arden, Award Winning author and Certified Animal Behaviorist joins Jeff to talk about her new book “The Complete Cat’s Meow.” A great book on all things cat. Darlene was with us for the release of her previous book “Rover Get Off Her Leg” and it was great catching up with her. She always has great advice and you will enjoy this book. Have you ever had your pet eat your illegal (or even legal for that matter) stash of drugs? Needless to say, or maybe not so needless is that it can make your pet seriously ill if not kill them. Dr. Partick Mahaney our Vet to the Stars in Hollywood joins us to talk about this issue that he has seen in his practice. Hurricane Irene has left more than a few rescues in bad shape and Jeff gives a run down on how you can help. News and announcements.

Hour2: Have you decided what you will do with your pet’s remains when it has passed away? Carol Carprita of Woodside Pet Cemetary joins Jeff to discuss this issue and talk about how a Pet Cemetery operates (See Video Below). Pet Cemeteries are not something new that has just sprung up to take advantage of the pet industry boom…they have been around for many many years. Carol gives some tips on what to do when you are in that situation. Irene (and yes her name really is Irene…like Jeff’s mom!) of the Liberty Humane Society in Jersey City New Jersey joins Jeff for the Rescue of the Week Segment to talk about Hurricane Irene last week and how they are dealing with the destruction as well as how they helped the animals. Spring Comes Early in Ohio – Butch’s First Day Out 2010!

I guess I should apologize for not returning phone calls and emails on Friday but knowing that we were in line for a “Sunny”, yes I said “Sunny,” day approaching 70 degrees, I decided to take a day off and hang out with Butch outside! Naturally, I had to get the John Deere out and give it a tune up and do a vacuum job on the lawn. Now, Butch’s idea of a great time, as you may know, is playing with his ball. In his excitement he went through 3 of the small ones yesterday, so low and behold after some calling around to a few stores and a few people hanging up on me for asking if they had “Giant Balls,” a trip to Wal*Mart after dinner yielded two of the Giant Balls that he prefers! He can’t wait! Look at the anticipation in his eyes…the uncontrollable excitement and the sloppiest of messes that I am left to clean up after! Slobber was flung onto the garage wall and windows 7 feet high! So a few more rounds of light snow and we should be ready for some darn good mowing weather!

OK, it was great to get back to the show again. I hate it when things pop up and prevent us from doing what love to do and that is talk to interesting people and bring you a few tid bits of information each week. Our rescue of the week interview ran into a last minute problem (it happens…) and could not call in but we will resume again next week. On with the show!

I know that I joke around about Ohio reagrding our weather a lot but living here I have a unique perspective. Ohio is one of the great states and I cannot deny this, which is why I was not surprised to find out that Jane Miller, author of Healing Companions is right here in my neck of the woods. There are many great, nationally known people (and Dogs) living right here in Ohio and Jane proves this point. The remarkeable work that she is doing for those suffering from PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and others with psychological issues is truly amazing. She will be the first to tell you that the dogs she has introduced into the lives of people, some of who are veterans, are the true “healers.” The things that Jane has trained these service dogs to do is remarkable and she talks with me about this and her experience in this field of work. With our coverage of the best dogs shows in the world, I thought it would be interesting to see what Crufts Dog Show that our freinds in the UK held March 11th – 13th has to offer. They have a great website and have many things happening for the show. Listen in to hear who won and check out the web site for more information and highlights of the show. Perhaps if we have a few more sheckles in the jar next year we can take a trip “Across the Pond” to check it out! There are some specific differences between thier show and our shows here in the United States!

Dr. Patrick joins us to talk about the treatments that he has been giving “Buddah” the cute little French Bulldog that was severely burned while trying to crawn underneath a car and got caught underneath a scalding hot exhaust system! I thought dodging pet poop was part of the experience, part of the essence, and yes part of the BONDING process that makes hotels love it when we bring our pets! FLORIDA TO ALLOW BREED SPECIFIC LEGISLATION - (From Pet Product news intl.)Here we go again. I’m getting really sick of talking about this… Senate Bill 1276, sponsored by Sen. Tony Hill, D-Jacksonville, allows “any local government [to place] further restrictions or additional requirements on owners of dangerous dogs.” My Buddy Butch is a very dangerous and deadly dog… to squirrels….

Hi again! We’re back! Quite an eventful week. Our main server crashed so I figured I would just work to update EVERYTHING at once and add in a hot spare or two so we don’t have this problem again. The way my mind works is that I would rather do it now, before things start getting Hot and I don’t have the time for it. Besides that with spring around the corner I don’t want to be in the studio fixing computers on a nice sunny day! OK her is the post I missed last week!

RESCUE SHELTER OF THE WEEK

Caring for Butch's Cousins in New Jersey, PA, and New York!

I was introduced to this organization by a new friend Joanne Anderson whom I met at Westminster in 2009 through another journalist and photographer friend Marty Van Duyne. Joanne is a writer of the “Pets, Pets, Pets” Column in many newspapers and featured the story of “Manley.” Read Joanne’s story in the Amityville Record. Jane of Northeast Boston Rescue talked to us for our Rescue Shelter of the week segment. Jane told us the story of “Manley” a Boston terrier that was found wondering in a bad part of Long Island and was picked up by a dog loving couple…did I mention that Manley was completely blind! Northeast Boston Rescue (NEBTR) is comprised of volunteers based in NY/NJ and PA and serves Boston Terriers in need within reach of our helping hands. Most dogs in foster care for placement are adolescent to adult dogs in need of re-homing in life for a multitude of reasons and will need caring hands to guide them as they transition into new homes.

John Garcia - DOGTOWN

John Garcia joins us to talk about the new season of DOGTOWN on the National Geographic channel. John is one of the managers at Best Friend’s Animal Sanctuary in Utah and has had the opportunity to work with some of the pit bulls that were seized in the Michael Vick dogfighting ring. Pictured here with “Georgia,” John is just the type of gentle soul that it takes to rehabilitate these trained fighting dogs into loving, caring, docile pets. With the patience of Job, John cares for and evaluates these dogs with the hope and determination it takes to retrain them to enter a loving home. John has the poise and talent in this area that many people much older than him are still trying to master. He is truly gifted and has much to say (and teach) along with all of the other trainers in this new season of Dogtown. Fridays 10pm ET/PT on National Geographic channel.

Well once again with the technical switchboard issues. Not to worry! Everyone was nice enough to call back in for a special taping of the segments and Voila we have a great show! As we move forward we are going to be moving the switchboard from New York to Ohio to give us complete control over some of the issues that may pop up during a show! We’ll still be live, able to better handle things as they arise! Anyway…on with the show!

New AKC Breed for the National Dog Show 2009

Patricia Princehouse, top breeder of the Pyrenean Shepherd or “Pyr shep” as they are sometimes called, joined us to talk about this breed that originates from the highlands of France. She discussed the history and the requirements of owning one of these small to midsized dogs. The AKC has very specific requirements for adding new breeds to the show ring and Patricia knows them all. Patricia teaches genetics and biology at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio so is truly and expert in the field of breeding these dogs and helping others introduce new breeds. She is a highly sought after expert in the field of dog breeding and she tells us just what it takes! Denise and I have been freinds for just about a year now and I think the reason for that is we share a common interest to help everyone’s pets safe and happy (not to mention our own)!
