I had the rare privilege this week to interview a couple of the great expedition leaders for NatGeo’s series “Expedition Week!” We went slightly off topic this week but I just couldn’t help but be drawn in by the opportunity to get some of these interesting people on the show! Some expeditions are scary and some are intriguing but they are ALL entertaining.  Piers Gibbon travels to the heart of the Ecuadorian Jungle to find the head shrinking natives and describes his journey. This week we discussed our trip to Philadelphia and the experience of being at the show. National Geographic's Homezone is an Interesting Site for Family Friendly content!

We also were able to talk to Alison Wagner the President and CEO of National Geographic’s Scholastic Publishing about a great new program to help kids and young people stay sharp if they have to miss school due to the flu outbreak! This program keeps youngsters engaged and interested and can be found at National Geographics Homezone on their WebSite. This week Dr. Patrick talks about another case of H1N1 found in a feline and also pet diarrhea.  Now, it’s not a topic you want to discuss during dinner but a messy part of pet parenting (and child parenting) that we all must deal with sooner or later! Listen in for information on when it gets to be a serious problem and when it’s time to get to a vet!

With all of the talk about the “Swine Flu” or the “H1N1 Virus” Dr. Patrick also offered information on if this will affect your pets. Barbara Bishop was kind enough to join us this week and tell us what Rufus has been up to in his retirement years from the show circuit. Rufus was the 2005 National Dog Show Winner and the 2006 Westminster winner just a few months later. He is the only dog to accomplish this feat! Listen in as Barb talks about the numerous awards and  accomplishments that Rufus has under his coller! Rufus has been doing therapy work and visits retirement homes, children’s hospitals, and is slated for a visit to the Ronald McDonald house with the Westminster’s “Angel on a Leash Foundation” headed up by David Frei, one of the co-hosts for the TV broadcast of the National Dog Show. Barb and Rufus are also members of numerous organizations and charities benefitting canines, the Bull Terrier breed and the humans they love!

In honor of Rufus this week Barb and I talked about the Breed Rescue for the Bull Terrier and how to go about adopting one. The Bull Terrier Rescue Network is run by the Bull Terrier Club of America and all prospective placements are checked out completely! We discussed the needs of the breed and unfortunate mistake some people make by adopting this breed because of the “look” rather than really reaserching the breed and knowing how to be a responsible owner and properly care for this loving, energetic, family oriented companion. These dogs NEED to be with their humans and demand to be part of the family. Please don’t adopt this breed as a “Fashion Statement!”
