This week – Hour 1 – Have you seen the movie “Secretariat” yet. Well this Disney movie naturally documents what many call the greatest race horse of all time. However, would he have been as great if he did not have an arch rival pushing him? “Sham – Great Was Second Best” is a book by Phil Dandrea and Phil joins Jeff this week to talk about the research he did on this other great horse that many have overlooked over the years. Also, Dr. Shelly Rubin stops by for the Vet Topic of the week. Seeing all the dogs in close proximity at the National Dog show, Jeff questions what precautions are needed to make sure disease does not spread between dogs. Pet owners taking pets to training or boarding need to know about this. Dr. Rubin also talks more about the research going into a possible resistant strain of heartworm. Now this is only research, and some of the things that they are looking into include pets that have tested positive even though they have been given preventative medication. Was it administered properly by the owners or is this a new type that we should be aware of? Also news and announcements…Butch Loves Chicken jerky but now there has been a problem reported with jerky imported from….guess where…

Hour 2 – It’s catch up time! Jeff spends time after falling way behind on emails, products and interviews! The National Dog Show Presented by Purina was this past week on Thanksgiving day. Jeff attended the event and has a few interviews and had a quick chat with Mary Carillo, David Frei, and John O’Hurley who was actually opening on Broadway in the show “Chicago.” This (and any pets show) is always a great event for the whole family and being the 10 year anniversary it did not disappoint. You will also meet a 10 year old brand new junior handler and hear how she got involved with showing dogs. RECALLS – Do you have any idea how many recalls there have been in the last 4 years? About 80 Cat food brands, about 120 Dog food brands, 9 horse food brands and even a reptile food… Well Jeff goes on a rant about it! He bets that a brand of something that you give to your pet has been involved. Learn how to find ALL the brands that have been recalled. Also, Family Movie update from the Hallmark Channel and Dove Foundation for the upcoming holidays. News and announcements.

 Hour 1-National Geographic is introducing a new web site for kids and reptile expert and host of NatGeo Wild’s “Dangerous Encounters” Brady Barr joins Jeff to talk about it. A fun site for kids, which is a great idea to keep them busy over the holidays, there are hours of fun that can be had here! A game that they can play for free with interactive video and other fun items. Best of all there is a section for parents to help keep tabs on the game their children are playing. It’s National Geographic so you know it’s a good site! Jeff also gives a complete run down on the six new breeds that will make their TV debut on the National Dog Show presented by Purina on NBC on Thanksgiving Day. Jeff talks about the specific breeds and gives summary descriptions on each.This is the fourth year that Jeff had covered the event so he also talks a bit out the procedures that the AKC has in place to register new breed standards and a little bit about how a dog show competition is defined.

Author Alison Pace who is a great friend of the My Buddy Butch Show stops buy to talk about her great news that her book “Pug Hill” was released to mass market paperback. She’ll explain what that means and talk about the other outstanding books that she has written. If you are interested in writing you have to read one of Alison’s books…she teaches writing in New York so she knows more than a little bit about writing! Gary Nice joins Jeff from the Canine Cancer Foundation in Phoenix. They have chapters around the country and are doing great work. Unless you have lost a pet to cancer or have lost a pet for any reason you will understand what this research means to many people. Not only that but the same cancers that attack us humans also attack dogs and the research being done benefits humans as much as it does dogs! Dogs rescue humans yet again….News and announcements – Report from an ABC-TV affiliate in Cleveland Ohio reports that spot on flea/tick preventative are causing serious illnesses and even death to pets in some cases. Reports from the EPA since 2009 prompted an investigation and a warning in 2010. Reminder – feed your pets pet food NOT human food or table scraps around the upcoming holidays.

Tina is featured on two other Christmas CD’s where she is in the company of superstars such as Huey Lewis, Stephen Bishop, and Dennis DeYoung. Even William Shatner did a track. I am very proud of Tina as she also produced another CD herself, learning the steps that we took on the production of the first one. John O'Hurley and David Frei Hosting the National Dog Show Presented by Purina

 It was great fun to talk with David and John over the last couple of weeks. They bring so much knowledge and style to the dog show each year that it was an honor to get their opinions and insight for this traditional Thanksgiving event for the My Buddy Butch Talk Show! Each year David and John fill us in on the latest happenings in the dog world and this year was no exception. Tiffany Simons was your sideline reporter for the National Dog Show

We were also joined by Tiffany Simons who did the sideline reporting for the broadcast. Tiffany has been reporting for NBC Sports so you may recognize her from The 2009 Westminster Dog Show as well as some other small events like SuperBowl XLI and XLII! Tiffany made the rounds in the benching area to cut a few vids with the owners and handlers getting their dogs ready for the ring. Tiffany shares her experience with us on the MBB Radio show and tells us her plans for future shows. We look forward to talking to her again as she will be at Westminster again in 2010!

I was able to catch up with John Miller who is VP of NBC Sports, and the man behind the National Dog Show, in the Press Room at the Philadelphia Expo Center. John shared with me the original idea and how everyone worked together to bring us this annual family tradition for the last 8 years! The National Dog Show Presented by Purina!

Dog Shows are in fact sporting events!

We also had Pam Mayes of the Alabama Pug Rescue with us who is the 2009 winner of Purina’s “Doing More For Pet’s Rescue Stories Contest.” Told us the heartbreaking story of “Faith,” a Boxer that had been neglected for weeks after being hit by a car. Certified Dog Trainer and Behaviorist for "Best Friends Animal Sanctuary"

Sherry Woodard has probably forgot more information about animal behavior than most of us will ever know. One of the top trainers and behaviorists in the country, Sherry’s gentle spirit and devotion to animals is demonstrated every day of her life. She walks the talk giving her time and talent to help rehabilitate abused, unwanted, or improperly cared for animals that end up that the Best Freind’s Sanctuary. You have undoubtedly seen her on National Geographic’s hit show DOGTOWN or on one of her day time TV appearances promoting the show and animal welfare. Well, we had Sherry all to ourselves this week as she took time out of her busy schedule to talk about the new book “DOGTOWN: Tales of Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Redemption.” The book covers many of the animals we have seen on the show but goes in depth as each of the trainers had the chance to write essays on the dogs that they have helped save and some that they could not. Sherry has been a principle team member of Best Friend’s Animal Sancuary in Kanab, Utah for about 13 years and has been rehabilitating and saving animals from around the country and even outside our borders. So listen in and find out what she has been up to and how you can actually help.

I love the National Geographic channel so I’m excited an proud to be interviewing some of the explorers and individuals involved in this great educational series! Adopt a Deserving Pet from this Caring Orgainization!

Since we are going to be at the Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks PA this weekend I thought it would be a good idea to talk to one of the rescue orgainizations in that area and find out how they are doing. Like most shelters around the country they have many animals available for adoption and will adopt out across state lines if someone is interested. They have a thorough vetting process and will make sure the animals have a good home!Melissa Levy joined us from the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society, or PAWS, to talk about the facility and the amazing volunteers they have fostering animals that are waiting to be adopted.

Vet to the Stars!

This week Dr. Patrick talks about “Show Prep.” All of the dogs that will be entered in the show are required to have a certain amount of immunization before they can compete. Listen in for information on what is needed and we all can benefit from this as we take our dogs to any training class with other animals! 

With all of the talk about the “Swine Flu” or the “H1N1 Virus” Dr. Patrick also offered information on if this will affect your pets. I can remember seeing Guideposts sitting on the counter while growing up or on a table at my grandparents house! It was an honor to speak with Edward Grinnan about the magazine and how the millions of subscribers feel about their pets. As they take prayer requests and have “True Stories of Hope and Inspiration,” Edward talks about how many people write in requesting prayers for their pets! Guideposts answered the call in great fashion with their “Prayers For Pets” section on Guideposts.com. Edward also shares with us how his wife’s dog Rudy actually introduced them for the very first time before they were married! It was a pleasure to talk with Edward because the work they are doing at Guideposts is truly blessed!

RESCUE SHELTER OF THE WEEK 

Geauga Humane Society Rescue Village in Ohio

Hope Brustein joined us from the Geauga Humane Society in Ohio. Now since this is a “Humane Society” they recue all different types of abused and homeless animals, rahabilitate and care for them until they can find them a forever home. Dogs, cats, ducks, pigs, and donkeys can be found at this terrific facility along with a large network of workers and volunteers who care deeply about saving these animals and see to it that they get a chance to live a happy, healthy life. Listen in as Hope tells us more about the wrok they are doing and how you can adopt!

Vet to the Stars!

We are heading into the winter months now and it is starting to get COLD much sooner than usual here in Ohio. We have had a few fires in the area that have left some pets seriously injured from burns and smoke inhalation. It is very improtant to remember fire safety now and with all of the wild fires in California Dr. Patrick is no stranger to seeing pets in agony because of fire. We discuss safety issues and also some of the effects you and your pet can suffer from when trapped in a fire. PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!!!

With all of the talk about the “Swine Flu” or the “H1N1 Virus” Dr. Patrick also offered information on if this will affect your pets. Check out his article here!
