This week – Hour 1 – Have you seen the movie “Secretariat” yet. Well this Disney movie naturally documents what many call the greatest race horse of all time. However, would he have been as great if he did not have an arch rival pushing him? “Sham – Great Was Second Best” is a book by Phil Dandrea and Phil joins Jeff this week to talk about the research he did on this other great horse that many have overlooked over the years. Also, Dr. Shelly Rubin stops by for the Vet Topic of the week. Seeing all the dogs in close proximity at the National Dog show, Jeff questions what precautions are needed to make sure disease does not spread between dogs. Pet owners taking pets to training or boarding need to know about this. Dr. Rubin also talks more about the research going into a possible resistant strain of heartworm. Now this is only research, and some of the things that they are looking into include pets that have tested positive even though they have been given preventative medication. Was it administered properly by the owners or is this a new type that we should be aware of? Also news and announcements…Butch Loves Chicken jerky but now there has been a problem reported with jerky imported from….guess where…

Hour 2 – It’s catch up time! Jeff spends time after falling way behind on emails, products and interviews! The National Dog Show Presented by Purina was this past week on Thanksgiving day. Jeff attended the event and has a few interviews and had a quick chat with Mary Carillo, David Frei, and John O’Hurley who was actually opening on Broadway in the show “Chicago.” This (and any pets show) is always a great event for the whole family and being the 10 year anniversary it did not disappoint. You will also meet a 10 year old brand new junior handler and hear how she got involved with showing dogs. RECALLS – Do you have any idea how many recalls there have been in the last 4 years? About 80 Cat food brands, about 120 Dog food brands, 9 horse food brands and even a reptile food… Well Jeff goes on a rant about it! He bets that a brand of something that you give to your pet has been involved. Learn how to find ALL the brands that have been recalled. Also, Family Movie update from the Hallmark Channel and Dove Foundation for the upcoming holidays. News and announcements.

 Hour 1-National Geographic is introducing a new web site for kids and reptile expert and host of NatGeo Wild’s “Dangerous Encounters” Brady Barr joins Jeff to talk about it. A fun site for kids, which is a great idea to keep them busy over the holidays, there are hours of fun that can be had here! A game that they can play for free with interactive video and other fun items. Best of all there is a section for parents to help keep tabs on the game their children are playing. It’s National Geographic so you know it’s a good site! Jeff also gives a complete run down on the six new breeds that will make their TV debut on the National Dog Show presented by Purina on NBC on Thanksgiving Day. Jeff talks about the specific breeds and gives summary descriptions on each.This is the fourth year that Jeff had covered the event so he also talks a bit out the procedures that the AKC has in place to register new breed standards and a little bit about how a dog show competition is defined.

Author Alison Pace who is a great friend of the My Buddy Butch Show stops buy to talk about her great news that her book “Pug Hill” was released to mass market paperback. She’ll explain what that means and talk about the other outstanding books that she has written. If you are interested in writing you have to read one of Alison’s books…she teaches writing in New York so she knows more than a little bit about writing! Gary Nice joins Jeff from the Canine Cancer Foundation in Phoenix. They have chapters around the country and are doing great work. Unless you have lost a pet to cancer or have lost a pet for any reason you will understand what this research means to many people. Not only that but the same cancers that attack us humans also attack dogs and the research being done benefits humans as much as it does dogs! Dogs rescue humans yet again….News and announcements – Report from an ABC-TV affiliate in Cleveland Ohio reports that spot on flea/tick preventative are causing serious illnesses and even death to pets in some cases. Reports from the EPA since 2009 prompted an investigation and a warning in 2010. Reminder – feed your pets pet food NOT human food or table scraps around the upcoming holidays.

John O'Hurley and David Frei Hosting the National Dog Show Presented by Purina

 It was great fun to talk with David and John over the last couple of weeks. They bring so much knowledge and style to the dog show each year that it was an honor to get their opinions and insight for this traditional Thanksgiving event for the My Buddy Butch Talk Show! Each year David and John fill us in on the latest happenings in the dog world and this year was no exception. Tiffany Simons was your sideline reporter for the National Dog Show

We were also joined by Tiffany Simons who did the sideline reporting for the broadcast. Tiffany has been reporting for NBC Sports so you may recognize her from The 2009 Westminster Dog Show as well as some other small events like SuperBowl XLI and XLII! Tiffany made the rounds in the benching area to cut a few vids with the owners and handlers getting their dogs ready for the ring. Tiffany shares her experience with us on the MBB Radio show and tells us her plans for future shows. We look forward to talking to her again as she will be at Westminster again in 2010!

I was able to catch up with John Miller who is VP of NBC Sports, and the man behind the National Dog Show, in the Press Room at the Philadelphia Expo Center. John shared with me the original idea and how everyone worked together to bring us this annual family tradition for the last 8 years! The National Dog Show Presented by Purina!

We also had Pam Mayes of the Alabama Pug Rescue with us who is the 2009 winner of Purina’s “Doing More For Pet’s Rescue Stories Contest.” Told us the heartbreaking story of “Faith,” a Boxer that had been neglected for weeks after being hit by a car. Listen to this great story with a truly happy ending!

Rufus, the greatest Colored Bull Terrier in dog show history, will represent The National Dog Show Presented by Purina® and the Kennel Club of Philadelphia as Canine Ambassador for the annual shows this November 14 and 15.  The announcement was made by Wayne Ferguson, President of the Kennel Club of Philadelphia, which hosts the National Dog Show, America’s most widely-viewed purebred competition, airing Thanksgiving Day on NBC-TV following the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The only dog to win both the National Dog Show (2005) and the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show (2006), Rufus has retired from the show world to work as a therapy dog, interacting with kids and adults alike at schools, hospitals, nursing homes and animal rescue leagues.  He is a Certified Therapy Dog with Therapy Dog International.”Rufus is one of our most popular champions ever,” offered Ferguson, whose club’s shows are the centerpiece of the annual cluster set for November 12-15 at the Greater Philadelphia Convention Center in Oaks/Valley Forge, PA.  “People are drawn to him.  His ongoing work as a therapy dog and his celebrity presence make him an asset.”

Ernesto Lara is a handler who works out of Greenfield Kennel in Bowmansville, PA, which is just a few miles from the 2008 shows in Reading.  He began his trade in his native Mexico and then moved to the United States in 1994 to train under Peter Green.  He served as Green’s top protégé until Green retired and now runs the kennel. He plans to show as many as 30 dogs at the National Dog show presented by Purina. He specializes in Terriers, handling two Top 10 in the breed. Ernesto was a great informative interview and we look forward to meeting him next week!

Tough Economic Times Mean More Animals in Shelters, with Less Help
