This week – Hour 1 – National Geographic’s award winning series Alaska State Troopers is now in it’s third season. Dan Stern, writer and executive producer of the series joins Jeff to talk about what it is like spending a whole year in Alaska to film the series and some of the things that they had to deal with. Personally, Jeff doesn’t know if he could handle the “midnight sun” in Alaska in the summer time! They also talk about some of the upcoming episodes. Dr. Shelly Rubin is past president of the American Heartworm Society and used to be Oprah’s choice for a veterinarian before she moved to California to run her network. He stops by to talk a bit about flea, tick, heartworm preventatives and remedies. After a recent tv news report by Cleveland’s ABC affiliate, that over-the-counter remedies have caused serious illness and death to some pets, Jeff wants to dig into this possibility with Dr. Rubin.
Hour 2
Vickie Fisher is the President of The International Cat Association and she joins Jeff to talk about their involvement in the “Meet The Breeds” show at the Javits Center in New York City in November. This is a great function for the whole family because there are not only cats but the AKC is also involved and so there are many breeds of dogs exhibited also! Dogs and Cats under the same roof is sure to be and exciting time and Vickie tell us about it! Big Cat Week Starts on December 11th on Nat Geo Wild. The AVMA was in Washington DC last week talking to government officials and in addition have launched an Obesity awareness campaign starting in the DC area in September for pets. This is a topic that we talk about a lot about on this show and Dr. Donna Spector is an expert in pet nutrition and she talks about the obesity problem with pets. Mysterious ailment is killing dogs in Bedford County Virginia and Montana Dog ends up with 2 diseases from one tick bite, Lymes Disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted fever.

This week – Neurologist and professor at the University of Pittsburgh Dr. Dawn Marcus is back with us to talk about the release of her new book “The Power of Wagging Tails.” Therapy dogs are doing unbelievable work helping people cope with various ailments and now Dr. Marcus is doing a study of the use of therapy dogs in waiting rooms. She also talks about how your dog could possibly make a great therapy dog. Dr. Patrick Mahaney is with us for the 4th part of the series about his visit to Peru…exotic animals a three toed sloth. Dr. Marcus also hangs around to talk about how exposing your baby to pets can help them avoid allergies later in life. She has been involved with many studies regarding this. Buck a new film about the REAL Horse Whisperer is out this weekend. Pets are getting sick from Cicada Ingestion, and Dogs are dying of Parvovirus in our news segment.

Dana Humphrey of Whitegate PR in New York and San Diego is with us to talk about the first “National Dog Party Day” simultaneously being held in both cities on June 24th. ALRIGHT! We’re Back in the Saddle Again! After a rough week of a bad chest cold and not being able to talk we’re back! Love the warm weather…forgot about the spring bloom that seems to be aggrivating allergies more every year. I don’t recall being allergic to the various blooming plants and tree pollen but I guess everyone changes as we all get a little older every year! Anyway, great to catch up this week and take in the requests from around the countryfor our new syndicated daily feature. Thanks to all of the radio stations around the country that are interested and all the email!

Barbara Babikian has been a great friend to us here at My Buddy Butch and I don’t have her on the show often enough to talk about the great work they are doing to help soothe the pain and anguish felt by so many children and parents that are suffering from the effects of cancer and other life threatening diseases.

She and “Lillie” have been with Angel on a Leash now for about 5 years and have done some amazing work and now barbara stops in to tell me of her latest charitable work for Hope and Heroes Children’s Cancer Fund. Barbara has become a team leader for this organization and in addition to her duties with Angel on a Leash is raising funds to help this noble cause which is hosting their First Annual Walk- A- Thon in New York on Sunday May 23rd. Have you seen “Sensation?” Do you see the dog on the logo for Westminster above? Of course you do! This is a painting of the dog Sensation who was the mascot for the Westminster Kennel Club in New York! This is a “Pointer” which is a hunting dog and a member of the “sporting” group as defined by the American Kennel Club. Columnist Joanne Anderson is a Metropolitan Dog Club “President’s Award Winner” and writer of the column “Pets, Pets, Pets” that is in a number of newspapers. She currently working to find the original grave site of “ Sensation” the actual pointer that is pictured above which they believe to be in Babylon near the Long Island, New York area. She has written more than 25 articles detailing the search which has had twists and turns that she never would have guessed when she started. Listen in as we talk about her search and if they will even hire a historical psychic to help in the search, as they are looking for a grave from the late 1800’s…very interesting. This week we discuss the happenings at Westminster. It was great to be in New York working again to see some old freinds and meet some new ones! This has always been a great event and this, being my second year, was no exception. As people are always willing to talk about their pets, few are as knowledgable as those that show their breeds at dog shows. I have learned much about many types of dogs from those who have owned them for many years and I talk to a few of those that I met this year at Madison Square Garden. Take a listen and maybe you might be interested in a couple day trip next year for Valentine’s Day!

Rescue a Doberman!

Donald Helfrisch joined us from the Doberman Rescue of New Mexico for our Rescue of the Week segment. Doberman’s are a great breed and were very well represented at Westminster this year but this misunderstood breed often gets a bad rap. Don, as a long time owner of Dobermans, gives us the inside scoop on what this type of dog is all about and also what their rescue organization is up to in New Mexico. This week Dr. Patrick talks about his first experience at the Westminster Dog Show. As soon as we met up he talked about his game plan and some of the information that he hoped to discuss with the owners of the specific past 10 breeds that have won “Best in Show” at Westminster and some of the breed specific ailments that have been bred out of the lines and some of the problems that still exist. Scottish Terrier “Sadie” Wins 134th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York!

"Sadie Wins!" Announcement at Westminster - Click!

The 4 year old Scottish Terrier “Sadie” (Ch Roundtown Mercedes of Maryscot) won the 134th Westminster competition at Madison Square Garden this evening. Sitting in the press box we were talking during the show and we all had the feeling that this would be Sadie’s night as she looked to be having a great time showing in the terrier group which was just before ”Best in Show.” She was spry, bouncy, and doing her famous “hula” dance as handler Gabriel Rangel waited patiently for their turn to be judged. After winning “Best in Breed” in 2009 here in New York, Sadie went on to have an outstanding year winning the National Dog Show in Philadelphia, The AKC/Eukanuba National Championship, and now Westminster all in a row. Sadie went into Westminster the number one dog in the country. Other favorites, and top dogs this year were a Doberman, Brittany, and a Whippet. It was no suprise that they made it to the Best in Show competition as they have been showing well also this last year. Gabriel has worked hard with Sadie and has capped off one great run of victories with this most presitious of wins in the oldest American Sporting event next to the Kentucky Derby. Congrats to Sadie and Gabriel on one terrific year.

Animal Allies of Texas!

Dusty Rainbolt runs the adoption center in Highland Village, Texas and the center is based out of Garland. They help both dogs and cats, but since Dusty is a cat expert I thought we would focus on helping the cats this week. Dusty also talks about the “Phoenix Project” which has recently been established in which AAT has partnered with the local battered womens shelter to provide temporary housing for pets of women seeking escape from an abusive relationship. RUFUS - 2006 Westminster Best in Show!

Sometimes my mouth speaks faster than my brain is working! Must be the snow or the activity getting ready for Westminster but at the top of the show, after reading through a list of four Barbara’s one Bonnie and one Betty, I mentioned Rufus’ owner as Barbara Babikian. It’s actually Barbara Bishop and as David and I were talking I realized my mistake when he correctly mention Barb Bishop as Rufus’ Owner! I suppose I should read my schedule rather than trying to procede by memory! Anyway my apologies for the mixup. BARBARA BISHOP was kind enough to drop by and talk to us as an owner of a past Westminster Winner of Best in Show - RUFUS! Barbara’s passion for the Bull terrier breed is quite evident as she discusses the breed standard and how the responsible breeders are trying to breed out the “sharpness” or “aggressiveness” of the breed. She also mentions how some feel that breeders are doing a disservice to the Bull Terrier breed by doing this and that RUFUS is not a good representative because he lacks this aggressive quality. Well, as a HUGE fan of the Bullys (and RUFUS) myself, I think that is absolutely ridiculous and completely undefensable so I’ll tell those who feel this way that when one of the noted “Aggressive” Bull Terriers wins as many Best in Breeds as RUFUS has, and then Westminster on top of it, only then will I entertain that thought! Obviously the judges of the most prestigious shows in the world feel that RUFUS’ temperment is perfect! Barbara has done it right and continues her love for the breed in the proper fashion and I salute her! Looking forward to seeing you and RUFUS in New York Barbara!

Vet to the Stars!

This week Dr. Patrick begins his discussion on his research into the past 5 breeds that have won “Best in Show” at Westminster and some of the breed specific ailments that can crop up. The responsible breeders that have dogs entered in Westminster are well aware of these particular problems that can arise in their respective breed and they do much testing and careful selection to try and breed issues out of their lines. These are the most knowledgable people on the planet with regard to their specific breed, which is why we always remind people to not purchase puppy mill dogs and to seek out a reputable rescue organization or breeder for the breed they are interested in. Search for the breed specific clubs which can refer you to a reputable rescue org or breeder in your area. You can do a quick Google Search and find the club for the breed you like or even go to the AKC website. These responsible breeders are more interested in the preservation of the breed standard and breeding healthy dogs than they are breeding for profit. They can help you with any questions you may have during the life of your new addition also!

TAAAA DAAAAAA! More technical issues with our feed! Well we were able to get 45 Minutes in before things pooped out on us…probably due to the massive power outages and lines down from the 70 and 80MPH winds that ripped through last night. SOOOO Next week we will extend the show 30 minutes to get the rest of the WESTMINSTER interviews in and we will even have an inventor of a new pet product in between! SORRY again for the delay but these things happen!

Â What an outstanding 4 days in New York. As soon as I hit the ground we were off and running. Check out this week’s show for all the details on the Westminster trip. From meeting collegues and new friends at the SkyBark Fashion Show/Party Friday nightÂ Â to theÂ Pet Writer’s conference on SaturdayÂ to the fantastic dinner at the DWAA Awards show Sunday, there was plenty to tell you during this show. I met up with David Frei for a breif conversation and of course how could we forget the DOG SHOW! THis is truely the “SUPERBOWL” of dog shows everywhere and they really know how to do it in New York. I even had the honor of sitting next to a good friend of the My Buddy Butch Talk Show, Animal First Aid and CPR expert Denise Fleck of SunnyDogInk.com.
