Hour 1 – Dr. Donna Spector, consulting veterinarian and nutritionalist of SPECTORDVM.COM in Chicago joins Jeff to talk about a new revolutionary cat food that treats a condition known as “hypothyroidism” which is a relatively common ailment in cats. Hills pet food released this new food and this will really help out cat owners whose furry feline suffers from this issue. Jeff discusses his trip to the 2011

United Kennel Club

World Coon Hound Championships held in Ohio by the UKC. Now, naturally Coon Hounds are hunting dogs but they can also make great family pets if you have the space for them to do what they love to do HUNT! They wouldn’t make a good city dog in the concrete jungle but a home with a good size lawn would be great for them. Jeff interviews the winner of the conformation and one of the judges of this fun event. Jeff also talks more about the UKC and gives their “Top 10 Breeds” list which includes the “American Pit Bull Terrier”…interesting and we’re glad to see their recognition of this much maligned dog. Our Friends at the HALLMARK Channel have done it again! The movie “YOU LUCKY DOG.” Starring Harry Hamlin and Natasha Henstridge premiers on Saturday June 26th and is a “Don’t Miss” event! The story is about a Border Collie “Lucky” who is rescued from a shelter and …. well, I won’t tell you the rest but you will Love it! Joyce Geier, a long time trainer of herding dogs joins us this week to talk about the Border Collie and herding dogs and a Champion competitor of National Competitions. I would say she knows just about everything there is to know about herding dogs and I can’t wait to have her back!

I had the pleasure of meeting Jennifer at the Columbus Pet Expo in March and was curious about “Reiki.” She gives us some insight and information on the Japanese practice of “Reiki” and talks about the benefits. She even talked about how Reiki can help Butch’s Thunderphobia! The funny thing about this topic was that the other guests on the show knew exactly what Reiki is and have used it!

Joy Turner was back with us back in October of 2008! Wow how time flies. She was nice enough to come on the show back then when we were a very new show and now she joins us again to talk about what she has been up to and even gives Joe a few tips on handling the birds that he is training to display at our local parks system. Joe was a bit intimidated by the rather large Hawk they placed on his arm and was asking Joy some questions about how to handle it from a mental perspective. I know there are a lot of skeptics out there when it comes to animal communication but I am no one to judge. Whether you are a skeptic or not , Joy Turner is a delightful and interesting lady to talk to and we look forward to doing more with her in the near future! Listen to what she has to say on this week’s show!

Phil Blizzard is the inventor of Thundershirt!

I’ve done a lot of talking lately about Butch’s “Thunderphobia” which taunts him every time a storm rolls in. Loud noises, fireworks, you name it…everything but the Military Channel in surround sound! That doesn’t bother him in the least. Anyway it does not surprise me that Phil is an Engineer as he talks to us about the process and research that went into the design of this product. As an engineer myself, I’m not surprised to find out the extent to which this was researched and it has been proven to work! I’m going to get one for Butch and try it out!

Dawn Smith, President of the Basset Rescue Network at Daphneyland in California joined us to talk about the rescue efforts for this fantastic breed. They not only rescue but they also rehabilitate these dogs to make them better suited for family life if they have problems. I had the rare privilege this week to interview a couple of the great expedition leaders for NatGeo’s series “Expedition Week!” We went slightly off topic this week but I just couldn’t help but be drawn in by the opportunity to get some of these interesting people on the show! Some expeditions are scary and some are intriguing but they are ALL entertaining.Â Â Piers Gibbon travels to the heart of the Ecuadorian Jungle to find the head shrinking natives and describes his journey. Well once again with the technical switchboard issues. Not to worry! Everyone was nice enough to call back in for a special taping of the segments and Voila we have a great show! New AKC Breed for the National Dog Show 2009

Patricia Princehouse, top breeder of the Pyrenean Shepherd or “Pyr shep” as they are sometimes called, joined us to talk about this breed that originates from the highlands of France. She discussed the history and the requirements of owning one of these small to midsized dogs. The AKC has very specific requirements for adding new breeds to the show ring and Patricia knows them all. Patricia teaches genetics and biology at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio so is truly and expert in the field of breeding these dogs and helping others introduce new breeds. She is a highly sought after expert in the field of dog breeding and she tells us just what it takes! Denise and I have been freinds for just about a year now and I think the reason for that is we share a common interest to help everyone’s pets safe and happy (not to mention our own)! Barbara and Frankie visit Schools and Hospice facilities spreading their great message!

We were joined by a terrific lady Barbara Techel, the Award Winning Author of “Frankie the Walk & Roll Dog!”Â Barbara is a dear lady and she gives her heart to her little Dacshund Frankie, who at the age of 6 experienced a slipped disc. This is a common ailment for Doxies but is all too frequent the reason that they are “put down.” Barbara shares with us thatÂ this is no reason that dogs should be put down and that, with the aid of a little wheel chair, dogsÂ can still have a great quality of life andÂ live happy,Â fulfilling lives. Kakadu - Coming to the USA from Australia!

I love Australia. I’ve never been there but know people who have and I have never heard one bad word about it! I will definitely have to take a trip there sometime but we don’t have to travel to Australia to get some of the great products coming from the “Land Down Under!” David Brown gave us a call ALL THE WAY FROM SYDNEY AUSTRALIA! Did you know it was tomorrow there when David called in yesterday! Figure that one out! DavidÂ joined us to talk about a great new line of pet products coming to the USA from Down under. David talks about the similaritiesÂ between Austrailian Pet owners andÂ us American pet owners! They love their pets just as much as we do and want the best for them. We didn’t get to talk to David as much as we would have liked but did get a chance to get some good details on the products fromÂ KakaduÂ and life with pets in Australia. We will definitely have him back on the show again to talk further about Kakadu andÂ pets in Australia!Â

Friends of the Pound here in Stark County Ohio is hosting an art show on September 10, 2009 to benefit the care, feeding and adoption of these great animals. They are working very hard to get deservingÂ animals out of the pound and into great homes to ease the overcrowding problem that so many pounds across the country experience every day. AAA – Who has not heard of the AAA? I have been a member of the Auto Club for 30 years! I can’t believe I’m old enough to even say that! After meeting Heather Hunter of the National AAAÂ at the Pet Writing Conference in New York last February, I knew we had to get her on the show. I’m gladÂ she could finallyÂ join usÂ and very happy that she was able to fit us in to her hectic schedule. Heather has yellow labs so she knows what it is like for us that travel with our pets. She shares some really great resources and a few facts I bet you didn’t know! AAA covers, and personally inspects the places they write about in their guides so they know what they are talking about!

Darlene McCaslin was with us a few months ago and has been hard at work making Pikes Peak Pet Pantry one of theÂ best in the country! Darlene stopped by to tell us about the lasted pet food drive that is happening until August 15th.Â They have helped keep over 1000 pets out of shelters in the Pikes Peak area and surrounding counties by helping people feed their animals during these trying econimic times. Please donate if you can, and if not check out their site for other pantrys around the country that may be in your area? None in your area, they can also give you tips on how to start one!

Concerned Dog Owners of California

Interesting turn of events this week led me to contact Cathie Turner of the CDOC! An email from my cousin Sherrie, a long time breeder of Champion Boxers from Grass Valley California began my investigation into this recent law that has taken affect in Los Angeles for mandatory Spay/Neuter. Sherrie was recently visitingÂ us here in Ohio and we began talking about some of the laws around the country because Ohio has started the Breed Specific nonsense here for the “pit-bull” law! Well, Cathie was nice enough to join us to discuss the mandatory spay neuter law and why it is NOT saving the lives of dogs where it is in effect. She also has news about another city that is actually doing a great job controlling thier pet population without euthanizing and it is NOT IN THE USA!Â Imagine that!
