Joy Turner was back with us back in October of 2008! Wow how time flies. She was nice enough to come on the show back then when we were a very new show and now she joins us again to talk about what she has been up to and even gives Joe a few tips on handling the birds that he is training to display at our local parks system. Joe was a bit intimidated by the rather large Hawk they placed on his arm and was asking Joy some questions about how to handle it from a mental perspective. I know there are a lot of skeptics out there when it comes to animal communication but I am no one to judge. Whether you are a skeptic or not , Joy Turner is a delightful and interesting lady to talk to and we look forward to doing more with her in the near future! Phil Blizzard is the inventor of Thundershirt!

I’ve done a lot of talking lately about Butch’s “Thunderphobia” which taunts him every time a storm rolls in. Loud noises, fireworks, you name it…everything but the Military Channel in surround sound! That doesn’t bother him in the least. Anyway it does not surprise me that Phil is an Engineer as he talks to us about the process and research that went into the design of this product. As an engineer myself, I’m not surprised to find out the extent to which this was researched and it has been proven to work! I’m going to get one for Butch and try it out!

I thought dodging pet poop was part of the experience, part of the essence, and yes part of the BONDING process that makes hotels love it when we bring our pets! I don’t mean BONDING poop to the bottom of my shoes! I’m with you Hariet, if people can’t follow the rules of a hotel STAY HOME! It’s the few that make it bad for the rest of us.

CALIFORNIA PONDERING ‘ANIMAL ABUSERS REGISTRY’  – As reported in an article by Alison Stateman in LA on Time’s blog, California State representative Dean Flores introduced this bill in late February but during a time where not only the State has financial trouble but pet owners are also struggling, can it pass when it needs to be funded by tax dollars? Great idea for the registry…let’s watch this one!

FLORIDA TO ALLOW BREED SPECIFIC LEGISLATION - (From Pet Product news intl.)Here we go again. I’m getting really sick of talking about this… Senate Bill 1276, sponsored by Sen. Tony Hill, D-Jacksonville, allows “any local government [to place] further restrictions or additional requirements on owners of dangerous dogs.” My Buddy Butch is a very dangerous and deadly dog… to squirrels….

Bringing Animals Out of Crisis and into Care!

Nicole Forsyth CEO of United Animal Nations joins us from Sacramento California to talk about thier efforts in helping to save animals of all types around the country. Founded in 1987, United Animal Nations (UAN) focuses on bringing animals out of crisis and strengthening the bond between people and animals through a variety of programs, including emergency sheltering, disaster relief services, financial assistance and education.  Learn more from my interview with Nicole on this week’s show.

 This week Dr. Patrick talks about the Pet sales ban in West Hollywood that prohibits the sale of pets in Pet Stores in that area. Helping to curb the spread of “Puppy Mill” dogs that are often not well taken care of not to mention sick which can end up costing the new owners hundreds if not thousands of dollars to take care of in addition to the heartbreak of watching the animal suffer and in many cases die or have to be euthanized. Perhaps this type of legislation will be sweeping the country before you know it forcing people to seek out rescue animals as well as reputable breeders for a happy healthy new family member.

Barbara Bishop was kind enough to join us this week and tell us what Rufus has been up to in his retirement years from the show circuit. Rufus was the 2005 National Dog Show Winner and the 2006 Westminster winner just a few months later. He is the only dog to accomplish this feat! Listen in as Barb talks about the numerous awards and  accomplishments that Rufus has under his coller! Rufus has been doing therapy work and visits retirement homes, children’s hospitals, and is slated for a visit to the Ronald McDonald house with the Westminster’s “Angel on a Leash Foundation” headed up by David Frei, one of the co-hosts for the TV broadcast of the National Dog Show. Barb and Rufus are also members of numerous organizations and charities benefitting canines, the Bull Terrier breed and the humans they love!

In honor of Rufus this week Barb and I talked about the Breed Rescue for the Bull Terrier and how to go about adopting one. The Bull Terrier Rescue Network is run by the Bull Terrier Club of America and all prospective placements are checked out completely! We discussed the needs of the breed and unfortunate mistake some people make by adopting this breed because of the “look” rather than really reaserching the breed and knowing how to be a responsible owner and properly care for this loving, energetic, family oriented companion. These dogs NEED to be with their humans and demand to be part of the family. Please don’t adopt this breed as a “Fashion Statement!”

Guideposts Magazine has been around longer than I have been alive and is an American Staple. I can remember seeing Guideposts sitting on the counter while growing up or on a table at my grandparents house! It was an honor to speak with Edward Grinnan about the magazine and how the millions of subscribers feel about their pets. As they take prayer requests and have “True Stories of Hope and Inspiration,” Edward talks about how many people write in requesting prayers for their pets! Guideposts answered the call in great fashion with their “Prayers For Pets” section on Guideposts.com. Edward also shares with us how his wife’s dog Rudy actually introduced them for the very first time before they were married! It was a pleasure to talk with Edward because the work they are doing at Guideposts is truly blessed!

RESCUE SHELTER OF THE WEEK 

Geauga Humane Society Rescue Village in Ohio

Hope Brustein joined us from the Geauga Humane Society in Ohio. Now since this is a “Humane Society” they recue all different types of abused and homeless animals, rahabilitate and care for them until they can find them a forever home. Dogs, cats, ducks, pigs, and donkeys can be found at this terrific facility along with a large network of workers and volunteers who care deeply about saving these animals and see to it that they get a chance to live a happy, healthy life. Listen in as Hope tells us more about the wrok they are doing and how you can adopt!

Vet to the Stars!

We are heading into the winter months now and it is starting to get COLD much sooner than usual here in Ohio. We have had a few fires in the area that have left some pets seriously injured from burns and smoke inhalation. It is very improtant to remember fire safety now and with all of the wild fires in California Dr. Patrick is no stranger to seeing pets in agony because of fire. We discuss safety issues and also some of the effects you and your pet can suffer from when trapped in a fire. PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!!!

With all of the talk about the “Swine Flu” or the “H1N1 Virus” Dr. Patrick also offered information on if this will affect your pets. Check out his article here!

Let your dog be your personal health trainer!

I have to admit when I first saw another health book with a dog on the cover I thought, Ok…another “It’s great to jog or walk with your dog” book. As I began to read through some of the pages and learned more about Dr. Dawn Marcus I was hit with something so much more and literally drawn into the book. Dr. Marcus not only says that there are great benefits to walking or jogging with your dog but she actually tells you WHY from a medical standpoint. Dr. Marcus, being a board certified neurologist and professor at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, has experienced the success of the methodology that she teaches us in her book “Fit As Fido!” Each section begins with statements or questions from REAL PEOPLE that she introduces throughout the book. Taking it one step further she wants our dogs to be our “personal trainer!” After the discussion we had on the show…Well, I’m in! I’m going to let Butch be my personal trainer and be reporting my progress on it! Dr. Marcus has even included information, great references, and schedules as well as a place on her web site where you can download a walking log and exercise diary!

A great park system working for and with their community!

Anne-Mary McGrath joined us to talk about the work they have been doing for the community in Springfield Missouri. They have developed a couple of Dog Parks over the last few years that have been models for others to follow. The community loves them and uses them regularly and with the enrollement increasing they opened another one! They host great functions there such as a Dachshund Dash and Dog fest this month and I’m sure they will be having more this fall Listen to how they did it and where you can contact them to start your own “Dog Park” in your city! He is 13 years old now and she has been cooking for him for many years. She shares a recipe with us and also some other types of ingredients that she sometimes uses in foods. Pet Expert Charlotte Reed

As I began my journey last year of having the book released and starting the radio show, I had no idea of the things I would be doing or the people I would be meeting. In the first few years of having Butch I had met so many nice people and pet owners that I had a pretty good feeling about the direction I was headed, but being a music producer I was a bit aprehensive based on my experience with people in “the business.” Imagine my pleasant suprise last fall when I recieved a phone call from Charlotte Reed effectively welcoming me into the fold. Charlotte put together the Pet Writer’s Conference in New York that I had signed up for and was calling me to say “Hi” and let me know that if I had any questions not to hesitate to let her know! After meeting her las February I learned that she is as delightful in person as she is on the air! Charlotte is a Pet Expert, an author (Miss Fido Manners Complete Book of Dog Etiquette), one of the co-founders of the Metropolitan Dog Club of New York, and an expert on pet products of all kinds! Listen in on our conversation about her many years of experience with pets, pet products and her current gig as the spokesperson for Arm & Hammer Pet Products!

Over the years I have spent much time in Florida visiting relatives and then my parents as they wintered there from Ohio. I got to know Miami and especially the Ft. Lauderdale are very well and enjoyed every bit of it! I love Florida and as I get older hope to make that the winter location for MBB Radio! OK, enough of my commentary…Sara Schlossman of Sun Shine Airedalers of Florida was kind enough to join us from sunny Florida…well it was storming during our chat…but still Florida none-the-less! In Florida and want an Airedale? …Then you have to check out our conversation about the breed and how you can adopt from Sara and this great Airedale organization!

As you know by reading my book, I have done a lot of studying on how to take the best care of Butch possible. It never fails that Dr. Donna teaches me something new almost every week. She loves our pets almost as much as we do and has devoted her life to the best care possible for them. Dr. Donna Spector helps me through a problem that Butch has had with his annual shots. Parvo, Distemper shots seem to cause Butch some problems. Is he allergic to the shots? Is your pet allergic to shots? Listen to Dr. Donna walk me through the need for these shots and help me understand the dosages, and some testing that can be done to see if he even needs them annually… not to mention what I can do if we find that Butch is actually allergic to the shots and other important information!
