This week – Hour 1: This week Jeff talks to Senior Editor of Sports Illustrated Jim Gorant about his New York Times Best Seller “The Lost Dogs – The Michael Vick Dogs – A tale of Rescue and Redemption” This is an outstanding book written by someone who knows how to do it! The story is about the Michael Vick Dog Fighting incident and now that Vick has signed a $40 Million deal, many people are seriously angry about it. Jim, a serious dog lover, gives us a little perspective on the subject. This is not something that is going to go away any time soon… Stay tuned. Cassie of “OSCAR” One Step Closer Animal Rescue in New Jersey joins us for the Rescue of the week segment to talk about Hurricane Irene and how lucky they were to get through it and some of the activities they have going on for fund raising and adoption. "8 State Hurricane Kate" and the New "Not Without My Dog"

Jenny Pavlovic was with us in the past to talk about her award winning book “8 State Kate” which was the story of a cattle dog that she rescued during her time spent helping the people and animals during the Hurrcane Katrina disaster back in 2005. Since that time Jenny has compiled an outstanding book titled “Not Without My Dog” which I was honored to be asked to blurb. This book gives you a complete page by page listing of the information you need to collect and keep in one place so you can quickly grab it and run in the event of a disaster around your city. I recommend it highly as how many of us really have a family emergency plan? Dr. Jo-Anne Dixon DVM is the Executive Director and the Medical Director for the shelter and it is always great to talk with her. They are working on a program for “Pit Bulls” to earn their AKC Canine Good Citizen Certification. THe stigma surrounding these dogs makes it very difficult for people to realize that they are very adoptable and need only the proper training to know how to behave. I’ve said it many times “It’s not the dog, it’s the owner!” The Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley promotes companion animal welfare by providing temporary shelter for homeless pets, adopting them to qualified homes, and reducing animal abuse, neglect, and overpopulation through community education and spay/neuter services. Listen in on the latest happenings.

Dr. Patrick joins us to talk about the H1N1 and the progress made curtailing this flu. It doesn’t appear that it is going to have the impact originally thought but it will probably be included in the 2010 flu shots given to humans. Seems our pets might be safe!

Ohio House Bill 568-”Euthanize All American Pit Bull Terriers” – NO EXCEPTIONS

As I have said in previous posts here, those who fight pit bull terriers, and harbor or train known viscious dogs should be penalized, stiffly (ala Vick), but those who own and have worked and trained their dogs well should not have to bear the brunt of a “government imposed” law that doesn’t apply to them. I am not an activist of any kind, and I do not own a pit bull terrier, but I do take exception when I live in a “free” country that is becoming more and more socialist every time our government decides what is “best for the people.” Where does it end, Pit bulls, Dobermans, German shepherds, any dog that attacks someone, any dog over 25 pounds…?

Please contact your local Ohio rep! I learned of this on a post from “mitymitedoggear.com” a great site for dog loving people who know how to properly care for and train a dog!

“Ohio House Bill 568, introduced by Representative Tyrone Yates of Cincinnati, seeks to prohibit the ownership, keeping, or harboring of a dog that “belongs to a breed that is commonly known as a pit bull dog.” Furthermore, if this bill is passed and adopted into law, all such dogs will be seized and euthanized. It is imperative that all concerned dog owners in Ohio contact their elected representatives and express their vehement opposition to this draconian legislation.”
HB 568 unacceptably provides that:
* No person shall own, keep, or harbor a dog that belongs to a breed that is commonly known as a pit bull dog.
* No later than 90 days after the effective date of this bill, a person who owns, keeps, or harbor a pit bull dog will be forced to surrender the dog to a dog warden.
* Within ten days of surrender, the dog warden shall euthanize the dog.
* If an officer has probable cause to believe that a dog is a pit bull, the officer may apply for a search warrant. After obtaining a search warrant, an officer shall seize the dog and transfer the dog to the dog warden, who shall euthanize the dog within 10 days.

All concerned Ohio dog owners should contact their elected representatives and express their strong opposition to HB 568.

Wholesale killing of pets that are NOTÂ a threat, is, or rather, should be unacceptableÂ to us as a society. The government cannot stop viscious dog attacks by killing all of the pit bulls in the state. Do you think that the dogs know that it is against the law to attack someone? Viscious dogs should be put down for human safety, I agree on that point, but in my opinion the owner of the “viscious” attacking dog is the one to be penalized. A viscious dog is a viscious dog no matter what the breed. When I was growing up it was the doberman. Now it’s the pit bull. What’s next? Picture this – 2 neighbors have a pit bull and a doberman, a kid is throwing rocks at the doberman through the fence as the pit bull watches on. The provoked doberman jumps the fence and takes a chunk out of the kids leg. The police come and give the owner of the doberman a warning and possibly a citation … and oh yeah, by the way,Â take the pit bull from next door, a docile family pet,Â away to be killed. Knock on a few doors to ask some questions and find one or two more pit bulls, takeÂ them away also to be killed… for no real reason…Hmmm, sound about right? If they pass this bill, it will be.

Dog Fighting NFL style

Michael Vick you make me sick! Hey that rhymes! Cool!Â Another â€œsuper fantastic,â€ â€œterrific,â€ â€œall star best player in the NFLâ€ is spending 23 months in a federal prison for running a dog fighting pit in one of his houses? Really? I know this is old newsÂ but I thought I would weigh in on it anyway. Is there a special NFL prison for these guys? Is Vick in the slammer with the rest of the NFL convicts, maybe the Bengals defensive backfield?Â What is that familiar saying, â€œTo whom much is given, much is expected?â€Â The more I think about this whole situation the more difficult it becomes for me not to become derogatory. Letâ€™s set aside the fact that this â€œgiftedâ€ or rather â€œspecialâ€ individualÂ was supposed to be a multi-million dollar icon for Nike, and other branding companies, and that he has â€¦ um â€¦ had a $130 Million contract with the Atlanta Falcons counting endorsements. This individualÂ is supposed to be a representativeÂ of the NFL, and a supposed â€œrole modelâ€ for kids? Â Now, letâ€™s just imagine the character of the type of human being it takes to engage in what Vick has been convictedÂ of â€¦ pit fighting dogs, while betting on the winner, then making a show of killing of the losing dog by drowning, shooting, or electrocuting it.Â Hmmmâ€¦interesting. NowÂ isn’t there also an old saying that the punishment should fit the crime? Do you think that the prison guards buy prisoners and then fight them to the death in a ring somewhere? As much as some want to make this a race thing, I don’t believe that it is. I don’t think that the dogs really care what race the people are that are killing them. Maybe people who are convicted of this crime should be put in a ring with 3 or 4 pit dogs that equalÂ their weight and let’s see if they can win! If they lose, should we kill them? I know people may think that I am a little more sensative to this because I own a dog that I care about but actually dog or not, I don’t think that dog fighting is even remotely acceptable. I know Vick is not the only person out there doing this, and gambling is also part of why VickÂ received theÂ sentence he did, but dog fighting is a growing problem. Just another commentary on our degenerating society. Where does it end …
