The goal is to get 1.5 million pets adopted by January 2011 and 5 Million bowls of food donated to shelters in need. They are well on their way but they need our help! Mike is in the business of saving lives and in his 40 years has saved millions of pets. Listen in to this great discussion with Mike as he tells us how he entered this line of work. Dr. Jo-Anne Dixon DVM is the Executive Director and the Medical Director for the shelter and it is always great to talk with her. They are working on a program for “Pit Bulls” to earn their AKC Canine Good Citizen Certification. THe stigma surrounding these dogs makes it very difficult for people to realize that they are very adoptable and need only the proper training to know how to behave. I’ve said  it many times “It’s not the dog, it’s the owner!” The Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley promotes companion animal welfare by providing temporary shelter for homeless pets, adopting them to qualified homes, and reducing animal abuse, neglect, and overpopulation through community education and spay/neuter services. Dr. Donna Spector joined us again this week and I’m happy she’s back with us! Dr. Spector talks with me this week about Feline Heartworms. Now, heartworm disease is more commonly thought of as a “dog” issue but our cats can suffer from it just the same. Dr. Donna tells us the details and issues than can arise from this so if you have a cat or know someone that does you’ll want to listen in. We also discuss “Vegan” diets for our pets. With a few new “Vegan” pet foods on the market these days you really need to know what you are doing BEFORE your pet developes problems from feeding a strictly vegan diet. You know, just because you may be a vegan doesn’t mean you should force your pet to be one also! Research this issue!

MORE FOOD BANKS HELPING TO FEED PETS ALSO – (NY Times) Animal shelters around the country are being flooded with hungry pets, and to tackle the problem, charitable organizations are setting up pet food banks, with products offered within regular food pantries.

PET FRIENDLY HOTELS FROWN ON DOG POOP (Hariet Baskas MSNBC.com) – Really? They must be kidding. I thought dodging pet poop was part of the experience, part of the essence, and yes part of the BONDING process that makes hotels love it when we bring our pets! I don’t mean BONDING poop to the bottom of my shoes! I’m with you Hariet, if people can’t follow the rules of a hotel STAY HOME! It’s the few that make it bad for the rest of us.

Tony Hill, D-Jacksonville, allows “any local government [to place] further restrictions or additional requirements on owners of dangerous dogs.” My Buddy Butch is a very dangerous and deadly dog… to squirrels….

I love talking to these people to find out what they are up to because they never dissapoint. Kristen Smith, director of Planet Dog Foundation talks about the aid that the foundation gives to organizations around the country to help organizations raise, train, and provide Therapy and Assistance dogs to people in need. She talks about many different types of assistance dogs and even mentions the work that small breed dogs can do to help their people in need. They also help organizations that use Rescued dogs for therapy and assistance programs. Don’t forget to check out their store Web Site also for great products. Stressing the importance of RESEARCHING the breed BEFORE adopting there are some very specific things you should know about why this breed was developed and what this means to you and your family. All of our dogs love a big CHOCOLATE milk shake or candy bar once a day RIGHT? WRONG!!!! The same chemicals that could potentially kill your dog are also in coco shell mulch that may be in your yard! Dr. Donna advises that you check the ingredients and types of plants you use in your yard. She also told us about a great section of the ASPCA Web Site where you can type the name of a plant in a search engine and find out if it is harmful to your pet. Also did you know that fluoride is harmful for your pet? Dr. Donna is going to be talking about the recent studies on fluoride and how they affect your pet’s health in an upcoming show! Bostons are the best! Look into adopting one of these great dogs!

Karen Toupard was kind enough to join us to talk about the BT rescue of Greater Houston in Texas. THey are a responsible organization have many great dogs to adopt. Boston terriers have been near and dear to me since I was a kid and I can say that they are a great breed and will add quality to anyone’s life that might adopt one. Please research the breed before adopting and contact the rescue group with any questions! We highly recommend adopting. Butch insists that we have a BT rescue on every couple of months or so!
