Debby Lenning, President of Women in the Pet Industry Association joins Jeff to talk about what they are doing to help get businesses started in the pet world. With over 200 companies joining just this year alone, the pet business shows no signs of slowing down and they can help you make important connections. Dr. Patrick Mahaney joins us to talk about a disaster preparrdness checklist. Did you know that people, children, and pets ALL swallow small items? REALLY? Things not meant to be swallowed can be bad but small disc batteries are among those things that are swallowed that can cause serious life long damage and can even be fatal to children and pets. This week – Hour 1: This week Jeff talks to Senior Editor of Sports Illustrated Jim Gorant about his New York Times Best Seller “The Lost Dogs – The Michael Vick Dogs – A tale of Rescue and Redemption” This is an outstanding book written by someone who knows how to do it! The story is about the Michael Vick Dog Fighting incident and now that Vick has signed a $40 Million deal, many people are seriously angry about it. Jim, a serious dog lover, gives us a little perspective on the subject. This is not something that is going to go away any time soon… Stay tuned. Cassie of “OSCAR” One Step Closer Animal Rescue in New Jersey joins us for the Rescue of the week segment to talk about Hurricane Irene and how lucky they were to get through it and some of the activities they have going on for fund raising and adoption. Heard of the United Kennel Club? This club registers breeds in all 50 states and 26 countries! Listen in to find out more about them and a great event that Jeff (and maybe Butch will be attending.

Hour2: Pet Expert and safety advocate Denise Fleck of Sunnydogink.com joins Jeff to catch up on some things you may want to consider now that the kids are back in school. Fido probably doesn’t have much to do but sit around and wait for them to come home so there are some things you can do to help pass the time and brush up on some skills…for both of you! Dr. Patrick Mahaney , our Vet to the Stars, Joins us for the Vet Topic of the week – “University study finds that second hand smoke is found to produce tumors in pets.” You have to hear this one and if you smoke…if you don’t quit, at least go outside. Composer and classically trained musician for Disney’s “Baby Einstein” series Tom Nazziola joins us to talk about a CD that he composed specifically to soothe animals “Music my Pet.” Does it really work? We’ll find out!

Hour 2 – Do you know what a “SPINZ” toy is? Ever want to have a chicken coup? What do these 2 things have in common? Dave Link, CEO of Precision Pet Products joins us to talk about both of these things! For our Vet topic Dr. Donna Spector continues our discussion on recalls and some of the drugs that have been recalled. Jeff talks about Buttons, Butch’s mom who had her surgery for “Luxating Patella” or trick knee this week and some other breeds that may have this same type of problem. Some dogs that are “Fat” are at risk for this…just like humans their knees are only designed to carry so much weight!

Shawn Heflick joined me to talk about one of the largest species of snake on earth that has invaded the Florida Everglades – the Burmese Python. Some of these giants can weigh up to 200 pounds and can reach 23 feet in length and are crawling through a swamp near you…if you live in the Florida everglades that is! Some are abandoned pets, others are believed to have escaped en masse after Hurrican Andrew barrelled through south Florida. These snakes are reproducing new generations pythons so listen in as Shawn talks about how they are hunting them down and what to do if you run across one of these creatures!

Denise Fleck of Sunnydogink.com joined us to talk about some safety issues and some of the work she has been doing with the Burbank Animal Shelter. In addition some very important news for people in the western states that may have issues with Rattle Snakes! Her Akita “Bonzai” was bitten by a rattler in California and lived. Seems that Denise had the inkling to start Bonzai on a rattle snake vaccine program weeks before which no doubt saved her furry friend’s life. Listen in on how you can prevent a tragedy of this type for your pet.

Jeff Dorson of the Louisiana Humane Society has been on the front line of this oil spill disaster from the beginning. A veteran of the Huricane Katrina disaster, Jeff knows first hand every day what is going on in Louisiana. Even though the flow has been stopped, let’s not forget that we still do not know the extent of the damage done yet and the animal rescue causes in the Gulf will continue to need our help. Please think of them if you are considering donating to a worthy cause.

They are on the front line of the Gulf Oil Spill. Let's see if we can help!

Jeff Dorson of the Louisiana Humane Society is no stranger to helping animals. Now they are working on the latest disaster to hit the New Orleans area, The Gulf Oil Spill. In fact, Jeff was also heavily involved with the Hurricane Katrina disaster that hit New Orleans and flooded the gulf states. They still have animals that they are trying to adopt that they saved from Katrina. They really need help there as they try to save as many birds and animals as they can in this difficult situation. THey are also teaming up with other orgs in the area such as the Clear Water Sanctuary in Bush Louisiana. Please try and help them if you can and see their Web Site for information on adopting one of the older dogs that they have from Katrina. This would be a big help.

It’s that time of year again! Denise Fleck of Sunnydogink.com is helping the Burbank Animal Shelter host its annual CPR demonstration event for pets this weekend. Denise is always great to have on the show and we had fun getting caught up on current events and some safety tips for this spring season. Fur Shui by Paula Brown

Paula Brown was absolutely delightful to talk to on the shw this week. We had a bit of fun with my unfamiliarity with how to pronounce Fur Shui which was derived from the ancient Chinese art of Feng Shui (or Shwee or Shway or…). Anyway, I have had this book for awhile and had started reading it only to have to start over because I didn’t want to blast through it. This is a great summer reading book for the beach or by the pool teaching you that your pet does have an energy about them and how it affects you. Your energy or ”chi” affects your pet also! I’m going to do a little experiment, reading the rest of the book, while Paula is in Italy for her book signing, and will have her back on the show to report in my findings with Butch and have her explain to me her thoughts and possibly what I can learn about the environment I have created for Butch! RESCUE SHELTER OF THE WEEK

Sherri Franklin of Muttville Senior Dog Rescue joined us this week!

Sherri Franklin of the Muttville Senior Dog Rescue in San Francisco joined us this week for our Rescue Shelter segment. This is a unique rescue organization be cause they specialize in dogs that are 7 years or older. I think this is a great idea and had I known about this years ago when we got my Father “Buttons” Butch’s Mom, I might not have Butch. They have a Senior for Senior’s program which is a great way to give a Senior Citizen a companion that may not need much training. Because all of these dogs are older AND fostered in a home, not a kennel, they have been somewhat trained to behave around a house and are familiar with basic commands. Please check them out and consider adopting!

VET TOPIC OF THE WEEK

Dr. Kim Bloomer and Shadrach

Dr. Kim Bloomer host of Animal Talk Naturally joined us again this week to talk a bit about essential oils and gave some tips on what I can do to help Butch’s “Thunderphobia!” I’ve already received some great emails from people that have the same problem! She talks about essential oils, aroma therapy, and also a peculiar finding that it is possible that Rabies Shots could be the cause of Butch’s Thunderphobia and loud noises. This is interesting because we are all required to give these vaccines to our pets BY LAW NOT BY CHOICE. Now I get why we do this, to curb the spread of rabies in us humans but is there a better way? Dr. Kim and Dr. Jeannie Thomason were joined by Dr. Patricia Jordan and had a great show of their own this week regarding Vaccines and I urge you to check it out on This week’s Animal Talk Naturally titled Vaccine Insights! Well once again with the technical switchboard issues. Not to worry! Everyone was nice enough to call back in for a special taping of the segments and Voila we have a great show! As we move forward we are going to be moving the switchboard from New York to Ohio to give us complete control over some of the issues that may pop up during a show! New AKC Breed for the National Dog Show 2009

Patricia Princehouse, top breeder of the Pyrenean Shepherd or “Pyr shep” as they are sometimes called, joined us to talk about this breed that originates from the highlands of France. She discussed the history and the requirements of owning one of these small to midsized dogs. The AKC has very specific requirements for adding new breeds to the show ring and Patricia knows them all. Patricia teaches genetics and biology at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio so is truly and expert in the field of breeding these dogs and helping others introduce new breeds. She is a highly sought after expert in the field of dog breeding and she tells us just what it takes! Denise and I have been freinds for just about a year now and I think the reason for that is we share a common interest to help everyone’s pets safe and happy (not to mention our own)!
