Hour 1 – Scott Hunt is co-owner of “Practical Preppers” which is a company that specializes in determining how preparred an individual is in the event of a disaster. Scott was one of the experts that provided his extensive knowledge for the National Geographic Channel’s show “Doomsday Preppers.” This is becoming quite the topic these days and Scott tells Jeff about some of the people he has talked to about this subject. Shame on us if we don’t start getting prepared and something bad hits. Jeff talks about a recent cooking project in trying to cook dinner for Butch from groceries bought on his regular weekly trip. He also gives an easy to make recipe and suprizingly enough Butch actually LOVED IT! With the recalls on jerky made in China Jeff also ventured once again into the jerky realm and tells you how to do it with some things in your kitchen and your oven. News and announcements.

Hour 2 – Dr. Patrick Mahaney of California Pet Acupuncture and Wellness, our “Vet to the Stars” in Hollywood joins Jeff to talk about his trip to the Westminster Dog Show in New York. Every year there seems to be something new going on and since Jeff could not make the trip this year for their annual breakfast meeting, Dr. Patrick carried the mantle of reporting his findings. Naturally the 6 newly introduced breeds were a big hit and Dr. Patrick was able to attend some of the additional functions, even the ….fashion show? Also, during the period where Butch was in peril the past month Jeff had the opportunity to talk with one of Butch’s Veterinarians Dr. Troy Larson in detail about some of the traveling that he has done over the years and his most recent mission trip to Brazil. Dr. Troy, along with his Church group, travel around the world on mission trips helping children and people from all walks of life. Dr. Troy Larson and Dr. David Soehnlen of Soehnlen’s Veterinary Clinic are the two people responsible for literally saving Butch’s life as Jeff really thought he was going to have to put him down! Scottish Terrier “Sadie” Wins 134th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York!

"Sadie Wins!" Announcement at Westminster - Click!

The 4 year old Scottish Terrier “Sadie” (Ch Roundtown Mercedes of Maryscot) won the 134th Westminster competition at Madison Square Garden this evening. Sitting in the press box we were talking during the show and we all had the feeling that this would be Sadie’s night as she looked to be having a great time showing in the terrier group which was just before ”Best in Show.” She was spry, bouncy, and doing her famous “hula” dance as handler Gabriel Rangel waited patiently for their turn to be judged. After winning “Best in Breed” in 2009 here in New York, Sadie went on to have an outstanding year winning the National Dog Show in Philadelphia, The AKC/Eukanuba National Championship, and now Westminster all in a row. Sadie went into Westminster the number one dog in the country. Other favorites, and top dogs this year were a Doberman, Brittany, and a Whippet. It was no suprise that they made it to the Best in Show competition as they have been showing well also this last year. Gabriel has worked hard with Sadie and has capped off one great run of victories with this most presitious of wins in the oldest American Sporting event next to the Kentucky Derby. Congrats to Sadie and Gabriel on one terrific year.

Animal Allies of Texas!

Dusty Rainbolt runs the adoption center in Highland Village, Texas and the center is based out of Garland. They help both dogs and cats, but since Dusty is a cat expert I thought we would focus on helping the cats this week. Dusty also talks about the “Phoenix Project” which has recently been established in which AAT has partnered with the local battered womens shelter to provide temporary housing for pets of women seeking escape from an abusive relationship. RUFUS - 2006 Westminster Best in Show!

Sometimes my mouth speaks faster than my brain is working! Must be the snow or the activity getting ready for Westminster but at the top of the show, after reading through a list of four Barbara’s one Bonnie and one Betty, I mentioned Rufus’ owner as Barbara Babikian. It’s actually Barbara Bishop and as David and I were talking I realized my mistake when he correctly mention Barb Bishop as Rufus’ Owner! I suppose I should read my schedule rather than trying to procede by memory! Anyway my apologies for the mixup. BARBARA BISHOP was kind enough to drop by and talk to us as an owner of a past Westminster Winner of Best in Show - RUFUS! Barbara’s passion for the Bull terrier breed is quite evident as she discusses the breed standard and how the responsible breeders are trying to breed out the “sharpness” or “aggressiveness” of the breed. She also mentions how some feel that breeders are doing a disservice to the Bull Terrier breed by doing this and that RUFUS is not a good representative because he lacks this aggressive quality. Well, as a HUGE fan of the Bullys (and RUFUS) myself, I think that is absolutely ridiculous and completely undefensable so I’ll tell those who feel this way that when one of the noted “Aggressive” Bull Terriers wins as many Best in Breeds as RUFUS has, and then Westminster on top of it, only then will I entertain that thought! Obviously the judges of the most prestigious shows in the world feel that RUFUS’ temperment is perfect! Barbara has done it right and continues her love for the breed in the proper fashion and I salute her! Looking forward to seeing you and RUFUS in New York Barbara!

VET TOPIC OF THE WEEK

Vet to the Stars!

This week Dr. Patrick begins his discussion on his research into the past 5 breeds that have won “Best in Show” at Westminster and some of the breed specific ailments that can crop up. The responsible breeders that have dogs entered in Westminster are well aware of these particular problems that can arise in their respective breed and they do much testing and careful selection to try and breed issues out of their lines. These are the most knowledgable people on the planet with regard to their specific breed, which is why we always remind people to not purchase puppy mill dogs and to seek out a reputable rescue organization or breeder for the breed they are interested in. Search for the breed specific clubs which can refer you to a reputable rescue org or breeder in your area. You can do a quick Google Search and find the club for the breed you like or even go to the AKC website. These responsible breeders are more interested in the preservation of the breed standard and breeding healthy dogs than they are breeding for profit. They can help you with any questions you may have during the life of your new addition also!

Your Host David Frei of the Westminster Kennel Club-134th Annual Dog Show Feb. 15th and 16th.

David Frei has been a friend of the show since we covered our first dog show back in 2008. It’s always a pleasure to talk with David about his passion which is his love for Dogs. I learn something new from him everytime we speak and our conversation was no exception on this show. David has been involved with the show for 21 years and he shares with us the current business surrounding Westminster for this Tournament of Champions, The 2010 Westminster Kennel Club Dog show. The show is February 15th and 16th at Madison Square Garden and will be televised on USA Network and CNBC. I also want to send our sympathy to David and his wife as they lost two furry members of their family last summer Belle and Ty. As we all know, it’s difficult to lose a companion that has been with you for so many years. All the best from us at My Buddy Butch and see you in New York David!

ALL antifreeze is LETHAL to your Pet!

Sam Martin of Prestone joined us to talk about the safety aspects of antifreeze! We all have it, hopefully in the engine and not on the floor. Always check under your car for puddles and spills. DId you know that Prestone partnered with the ASPCA many years ago to get the word out to pet owners on the hazards of antifreeze? Last week in The My Buddy Butch Chronicle I wrote about changing the thermostat in my truck…what a mess I made with antifreeze on the floor! Cleaned it up pretty good so Butch wouldn’t get into itbut thought it was a good idea to throw the reminder out there. Sam is also a dog lover AND a rescuer! Thanks Sam for taking the time to be with us! I’ve been using Prestone for 30 years and always will!

Vet to the Stars!

This week Dr. Patrick talks to us about “Stump.” Stump was the 2009 Westminster Champion Sussex Spaniel. He was not only the oldest dog to ever win Westminster but did you know that he almost died a few years ago from a bizzar bacterial infection? Dr. Patrick talks about this and we also get into a long discussion on Vaccines. After a ripple I caused with my last “Chronicle” by mentioning booster shot vaccinations, I think it’s time to spend a little more time incvestigating this issue from the pro/con standpoint and make a decision on how I will handle Butch’s future!

My Buddy Butch Show #26 – WESTMINSTER Part 1

TAAAA DAAAAAA! More technical issues with our feed! Well we were able to get 45 Minutes in before things pooped out on us…probably due to the massive power outages and lines down from the 70 and 80MPH winds that ripped through last night. SOOOO Next week we will extend the show 30 minutes to get the rest of the WESTMINSTER interviews in and we will even have an inventor of a new pet product in between! SORRY again for the delay but these things happen!

Â What an outstanding 4 days in New York. As soon as I hit the ground we were off and running. Check out this week’s show for all the details on the Westminster trip. From meeting collegues and new friends at the SkyBark Fashion Show/Party Friday nightÂ Â to theÂ Pet Writer’s conference on SaturdayÂ to the fantastic dinner at the DWAA Awards show Sunday, there was plenty to tell you during this show. I met up with David Frei for a breif conversation and of course how could we forget the DOG SHOW! THis is truely the “SUPERBOWL” of dog shows everywhere and they really know how to do it in New York. I even had the honor of sitting next to a good friend of the My Buddy Butch Talk Show, Animal First Aid and CPR expert Denise Fleck of SunnyDogInk.com.

OK We had a great show BUT I had a bit of an issue! If you listened to the show for the David Frei interview it did not play initially on the show because for some reason it was not processed! OH BROTHER…that’s show biz! Anyway, we were able to get the interviewÂ edited into the showÂ so it should now be streaming and be available for download. If it does not show up you can always hear the interview on last week’s show!

The Westminster Charity for Therapy Dogs!

David Frei, TV commentator for Westminster Dog ShowÂ and the NBC Purina National Dog Show . David is Americaâ€™s foremost authority on all breeds of dogs and has been commentating for the Westminster Show for 20 years! He is truely a great guy to talk with and hope he will stop back again in the future. David shares his adventures with UNO the beagle, last years winner of the Westminster show, and other interesting facts. David also talks about Angel on a Leash, a great charity thatÂ champions working withÂ therapy dogs in health care facilities, schools, rehab, extended care, correctional institutions, and crisis intervention.Â
