The AVMA was in Washington DC last week talking to government officials and in addition have launched an Obesity awareness campaign starting in the DC area in September for pets. This is a topic that we talk about a lot about on this show and Dr. Donna Spector is an expert in pet nutrition and she talks about the obesity problem with pets. Mysterious ailment is killing dogs in Bedford County Virginia and Montana Dog ends up with 2 diseases from one tick bite, Lymes Disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted fever.

Not a popular outlook as she acknowledges especially when most of them are doing everything thing they can at breakneck speed to save animals on the euthanasia list. Also Joan Powers of the Colorado Pug Rescue checks in to talk about “Preloved-Auction” and how this format is helping rescues to save Pugs as far away as England. Dr. Patrick Mahaney our Vet to the Stars drops in to continue his series on his trip to Peru. Ever heard of a “BOT FLY?” well he will tell all about it and if we have to worry here in the USA. Texas Senate finally passes the “Animal Abuse Registry” where they keep track of animal abusers but there is a hitch…naturally. also in our news section a stray Pit Bull rescues a woman and her child from a would-be attacker in Florida…you won’t believe this!

Our Friends at the HALLMARK Channel have done it again! The movie “YOU LUCKY DOG.” Starring Harry Hamlin and Natasha Henstridge premiers on Saturday June 26th and is a “Don’t Miss” event! The story is about a Border Collie “Lucky” who is rescued from a shelter and …. well, I won’t tell you the rest but you will Love it! Joyce Geier, a long time trainer of herding dogs joins us this week to talk about the Border Collie and herding dogs and a Champion competitor of National Competitions. I would say she knows just about everything there is to know about herding dogs and I can’t wait to have her back!

OK, it was great to get back to the show again. I hate it when things pop up and prevent us from doing what love to do and that is talk to interesting people and bring you a few tid bits of information each week. Our rescue of the week interview ran into a last minute problem (it happens…) and could not call in but we will resume again next week. On with the show!

I know that I joke around about Ohio reagrding our weather a lot but living here I have a unique perspective. Ohio is one of the great states and I cannot deny this, which is why I was not surprised to find out that Jane Miller, author of Healing Companions is right here in my neck of the woods. There are many great, nationally known people (and Dogs) living right here in Ohio and Jane proves this point. The remarkeable work that she is doing for those suffering from PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and others with psychological issues is truly amazing. She will be the first to tell you that the dogs she has introduced into the lives of people, some of who are veterans, are the true “healers.” The things that Jane has trained these service dogs to do is remarkable and she talks with me about this and her experience in this field of work. She has many speaking engagements and you can see all of them at her website Healing Companions!

With our coverage of the best dogs shows in the world, I thought it would be interesting to see what Crufts Dog Show that our freinds in the UK held March 11th – 13th has to offer. They have a great website and have many things happening for the show. Listen in to hear who won and check out the web site for more information and highlights of the show. Perhaps if we have a few more sheckles in the jar next year we can take a trip “Across the Pond” to check it out! There are some specific differences between thier show and our shows here in the United States!

Dr. Patrick joins us to talk about the treatments that he has been giving “Buddah” the cute little French Bulldog that was severely burned while trying to crawn underneath a car and got caught underneath a scalding hot exhaust system! He also talks about a recent Hawk attack on a little 8 pound dog and reminds us to stay alert to help protect our buddies!

Tony Hill, D-Jacksonville, allows “any local government [to place] further restrictions or additional requirements on owners of dangerous dogs.” My Buddy Butch is a very dangerous and deadly dog… to squirrels….

RUFUS THE 2009 CANINE AMBASSADOR FOR THE NATIONAL DOG SHOW

Rufus - "The King"

Barbara Bishop was kind enough to join us this week and tell us what Rufus has been up toÂ in his retirementÂ years from the show circuit. Rufus was the 2005 National Dog Show Winner and the 2006 Westminster winner just a few months later. He is the only dog to accomplish thisÂ feat! Listen in as Barb talks about the numerous awards and Â accomplishments that Rufus has under his coller! Rufus has been doing therapy work and visits retirement homes, children’s hospitals, and is slated for a visit to the Ronald McDonald house with the Westminster’s “Angel on a Leash Foundation” headed up by David Frei, one of the co-hosts for the TV broadcast of the National Dog Show. Barb and Rufus are also members of numerous organizations and charities benefitting canines,Â the Bull TerrierÂ breed and the humans they love!

In honor of Rufus this week Barb and I talked about the Breed Rescue for the Bull Terrier and how to go about adopting one. The Bull Terrier Rescue Network is run by the Bull Terrier Club of America and all prospective placements are checked out completely! We discussed the needs of the breed and unfortunate mistake some people make by adopting this breed because of the “look” rather than really reaserching the breed and knowing how to be a responsible owner and properly care for this loving, energetic, family oriented companion. These dogs NEED to be with their humans and demand to be part of the family. Please don’t adopt this breed as a “Fashion Statement!”
