This week – Jennifer Shryock of Dogs & Storks joins us to talk about the importance of bringing a new baby into the home with a dog. This is the first national program that prepares families with dogs for a new life with a baby. Jeff is a big supporter of this program because it can prevent many unpleasant situations including surrendering a dog to already overcrowded rescue shelters! Also Joplin Mo. Human Society has has one of the toughest times an organization like this can possibly have. We have been following the plight of Joplin since the tornado and storms in May and now Jeff talks with Karen Aquino the executive director of the Jopline Humane Society to see what is currently happening there as well as some of the amazing stories that have happened. News and Announcements.
Hour 2 – Did you know that many of our states are starting to name official state Dogs and Cats? Well, Gina DiNardo of the AKC stops by to tell us all about it. Gina is always fun to talk to and she lets us in on the latest states to join the fray. There is a WILD MOUNTAIN LION (cougar) roaming north east Ohio…yes north east Ohio and Jeff talks a bit about the characteristics, activities, and habits of this animal and some safety precautions. Dr. Jennifer Jellison is back with us to speak about a different angle on the “moist” weather we’ve had and the rabid insect population that is exploding! What she is seeing in her practice and how to combat the insects. Dick Rolfe, CEO of the Dove Foundation continues the discussion on movies released this summer. Alabama has seen an increase in snake bites due to the drought and the migration of animals and reptiles to find water. Pets are dying in hot cars AGAIN….ARE YOU KIDDING ME – Jeff goes on a rant….

Dr. Nancy KayDr. Nancy Kay is a great freind of the My Buddy Butch Show and she has been with us in the past for a few shows sharing tips from her book “Speaking for Spot.” This is a great one stop shop for information on how to take the best care of your dog and how to work with your Veterinarian for your pets benenfit. I keep this book handy and it has answered many questions I had while taking care of Butch in the last year! Great for new and expert dog parents alike. Dr. Nancy joined us to talk about her first hand experience with puppy mills. Often a sad ending and heartbreaking experience, as a Veterinarian, Dr. Nancy sees too much of this going on and she shares a story of a sweet little Boston Terrier that had to be put down because of a genetic defect that just could not be repaired by surgery. If you are planning on a new furry addition to your family you should listen to this conversation!

The story follows Belle, a young dog who has never met a kind human, as she is rescued by a young girl named Darcy. Belle is terrified, but other dogs and a cat teach Belle about trust, and she learns how to face the painful issues around her.
It was great to speak with Connie about this book because it centers around a theme that can help kids deal with abuse and perhaps teach them to trust and that not all people are cruel. It also can teach them how to care for another person and even a pet!

Stacy Thomas Director of PR for the Chicago Canine Rescue dropped in to talk about their organization. Once you get started it takes a lot of heart to keep up the great work and they have done just that!. Beginning in 2001 they have grown to have their own facility with the help from many volunteers and donations. If you are around the Chicagoland area please look them and if you are not ready to adopt see if you can volunteer to help out and keep off some of the Winter pounds! VET TOPIC OF THE WEEK

Vet to the Stars!

This week Dr. Patrick talks to us about “Bedroom Safety for your pet!” Really… what possibly could be a problem in my bedroom? Well, Dr. Patrick has seen many instances where things laying around the bedroom have ended up in pet’s stomach. Listen in on what he has pulled out of a pet stomach you won’t believe it!

Also last week Dr. Patrick gave us a first hand look at a pet that suffered burns and how he is treating it. He has provided pictures but be warned they are graphic. Budda is a sweet little French Bulldog that suffered burns and is now going through treatments to help him heal. I wanted to keep this up again this week because it is important to keep your pet from under your car…and this is one of many reasons why!

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of those affected by the devastating earthquake in Haiti. As there are so many places that have aid stations and donation acceptance set up, it would be redundant for us to attempt such an activity. Please consider donating at a TRUSTED location such as your local Red Cross or inquire at your local radio or TV station for a good place to donate. Many service providers are making it easy to donate even by texting a message.

Well, now that our snow is starting to melt from a few days in the high 30’s the only memory I’ll have of it is a sprained back from too much shoveling! We’re not out of the woods yet as most of us here in Ohio and the Great Lake state know we could be dealing with the white stuff well into April or even May if conditions are right! I hope conditions are wrong! On with the show…

What would you do? Mine - a must see film!

Jessie Pullins did not expect to leave his long time friend and companion behind as he evacuated his large family in two vehicles to Houston as the water rose in New Orleans. 2 vehicles packed with too many people setting out on a 75 mile drive which took 12 hours to Houston would be too much for the large black lab. Leaving plenty of food and water for “JJ” Jessie knew he would return in 2 or 3 days to get JJ and reunite him with the family. It was not to be as authorities would not let anyone back in to their homes much less the city for months. Jessie discusses the heartwrenching ordeal he went through to find JJ and the legal issues that appeared during his quest.

I was lucky enough to be quoted in the article based on my experience with my Father who is 85 years old and witnessing first hand the benefits that the eldely recieve out of caring for a pet . Vet to the Stars!

This week Dr. Patrick talks to us about burns that your pet can recieve from many different locations. Butch has a tendancy to want to walk under my truck in the garage right after we get out. The exhaust pipe and radiator and surrounding metal is still scalding HOT. Now my truck rides pretty high and Butch can almost stand up underneath but if he does it in the wrong place he will cook the hair and skin where he touches the hot metal. John Garcia - DOGTOWN

John Garcia joins us to talk about the new season of DOGTOWN on the National Geographic channel. John is one of the managers at Best Friend’s Animal Sanctuary in Utah and has had the opportunity to work with some of the pit bulls that were seized in the Michael Vick dogfighting ring. Pictured here with “Georgia,” John is just the type of gentle soul that it takes to rehabilitate these trained fighting dogs into loving, caring, docile pets. With the patience of Job, John cares for and evaluates these dogs with the hope and determination it takes to retrain them to enter a loving home. John has the poise and talent in this area that many people much older than him are still trying to master. He is truly gifted and has much to say (and teach) along with all of the other trainers in this new season of Dogtown. Fridays 10pm ET/PT on National Geographic channel.

As we RACE through the year trying to move forward during these difficult times, it seems that the Holidays just arrive faster every year. Everybody is rushing around trying to get things done. The world will not end if these items do not get done RIGHT NOW! Please take some time for yourself to just sit, relax, and forget whatever is bothering you for just a few moments. Take a few deep breaths, call the dog or the cat and spend some time to sit and pet your best friend. It will help you and your buddy slow down for a few moments and enjoy this special time of year even in the midst of turmoil that may surround you! All the best this season from me and Butch!

RESCUE SHELTER OF THE WEEK

Please help these deserving pets find a home.

Anne Reel of The Humane Society of Elkhart Indiana joined us this week to talk about the tremendous overcrowding problem happening at the shelter. This is happening not only in Elkhart but in other areas around the country and unfortunately you know what happens when you get 600 to 700 animals each month and only have room for 300. It’s heartbreaking for the staff members as well as the community when animals need to be put down. Check out the article on MSNBC about this Humane Society trying to find homes for many animals.

She walks the talk giving her time and talent to help rehabilitate abused, unwanted, or improperly cared for animals that end up that the Best Freind’s Sanctuary.Â You have undoubtedly seen her on National Geographic’s hit showÂ DOGTOWN or on one of her day time TV appearances promoting the show and animal welfare. Well, we had Sherry all to ourselves this week as she took time out of her busy schedule to talk about the new book “DOGTOWN: Tales of Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Redemption.”Â The book covers many of the animals we have seen on the show but goes in depth as each of the trainers had the chance to write essays on the dogs that they have helped save and some that they could not.Â Sherry has been a principleÂ team memberÂ of Best Friend’s Animal Sancuary in Kanab, Utah for about 13 yearsÂ and has been rehabilitating and saving animals from around the country and even outside our borders. Adopt a Deserving Pet from this Caring Orgainization!

Since we are going to be at the Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks PA this weekend I thought it would be a good idea to talk to one of the rescue orgainizations in that area and find out how they are doing. Like most shelters around the country they have many animals available for adoption and will adopt out across state lines if someone is interested. They have a thorough vetting process and will make sure the animals have a good home!Melissa Levy joined us from the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society, or PAWS,Â to talk about the facility and the amazing volunteers they have fostering animals that are waiting to be adopted.

We really had a lot to cover this week so the show ran over our usualÂ one hour spot. Also you’ll notice that, thanks to the great David Tyler in Montreal Canada,Â weÂ now have our new radio imaging playing which includes the newÂ My Buddy Butch Radio ShowÂ IntroÂ and ending and introductions to the various segments. You have probably heard his voice before David’s voice is on many radio stations across the country and Canada (and around the world for that matter!)ThanksÂ David for a great job giving us some added “personality!” Now …On with the show!

Abusers are losers!

The interview with Johnny O was a great time but we taped it at 6am! We both laughed at the fact that “it’s the middle of the night!” We sounded a little wrung out being that early but weÂ had a good conversation and talked about the fantastic work theseÂ tough guys are doing together. Admittedly, the backgrouds of someÂ these guys is not steller but what brings them together is the love of animals and banding together for a cause…rescuing abused, helpless animals and giving them a chance. “Abusers areÂ losers” is the battle cry of this small army of rough looking dudes, and they are not afraid to take on anything when it comes to saving animals. Kathryn Kirk was Rufus’s handler during the amazing winning streak of this lovable Bull terrier and she joins us to talk about how the handlers are “handling” the upcoming show and how you can become a handler also! RESCUE SHELTER OF THE WEEK

This breed "Demands" to be with their Family!

I have an affinity to the “bully breeds” which is illustrated in my love for Butch! Butch is a Boston terrier which is a cousin of the Bull terrier as they both came from the same stock. The english bulldog and the english white terrier over one hundred years ago! I know what it takes to live with one of these “Bully” type breeds and can tell you to never mistake plain stubborness for stupidity in these types of dogs. They are one of the smartestÂ breeds around and they prove it every day! In honor of Rufus we continued with Rebecca QuiglyÂ who is the Chairman of the Tampa Bay Bull Terrier Club Rescue Committee.Â They are rescuing and placing Bull terriers around the country and have specific guidlines that must be met beforeÂ they will let you adopt.Â Check out these other sitesÂ dedicated to the breedÂ The Bull Terrier Rescue Network is run by the Bull Terrier Club of America and all prospective placements are checked out completely! RUFUS THE 2009 CANINE AMBASSADOR FOR THE NATIONAL DOG SHOW

Rufus - "The King"

Barbara Bishop was kind enough to join us this week and tell us what Rufus has been up toÂ in his retirementÂ years from the show circuit. Rufus was the 2005 National Dog Show Winner and the 2006 Westminster winner just a few months later. He is the only dog to accomplish thisÂ feat! Listen in as Barb talks about the numerous awards and Â accomplishments that Rufus has under his coller! Rufus has been doing therapy work and visits retirement homes, children’s hospitals, and is slated for a visit to the Ronald McDonald house with the Westminster’s “Angel on a Leash Foundation” headed up by David Frei, one of the co-hosts for the TV broadcast of the National Dog Show. Barb and Rufus are also members of numerous organizations and charities benefitting canines,Â the Bull TerrierÂ breed and the humans they love!

In honor of Rufus this week Barb and I talked about the Breed Rescue for the Bull Terrier and how to go about adopting one. The Bull Terrier Rescue Network is run by the Bull Terrier Club of America and all prospective placements are checked out completely! We discussed the needs of the breed and unfortunate mistake some people make by adopting this breed because of the “look” rather than really reaserching the breed and knowing how to be a responsible owner and properly care for this loving, energetic, family oriented companion. These dogs NEED to be with their humans and demand to be part of the family. Please don’t adopt this breed as a “Fashion Statement!”

I can remember seeing Guideposts sitting on the counter while growing upÂ or on a table at my grandparents house! It was an honor to speak with Edward Grinnan about the magazine and how the millions of subscribers feel about their pets. As they take prayer requests and have “True Stories of Hope and Inspiration,” Edward talks about how many people write in requesting prayers for their pets! Guideposts answered the call in great fashion with their “Prayers For Pets” section on Guideposts.com. Geauga Humane Society Rescue Village in Ohio

Hope Brustein joined us from the Geauga Humane Society in Ohio. Now since this is a “Humane Society” they recue all different types of abused and homeless animals, rahabilitate and care for them until they can find them a forever home. Dogs, cats, ducks, pigs, and donkeys can be found at this terrific facility along with a large network of workers and volunteers who care deeply about saving these animals and see to it that they get a chance to live a happy, healthy life. Listen in as Hope tells us more about the wrok they are doing and how you can adopt!

We are heading into the winter months now and it is starting to get COLD much sooner than usual here in Ohio. We have had a few fires in the area that have left some pets seriously injured from burns and smoke inhalation. It is very improtant to remember fire safety now and with all of the wild fires in California Dr. Patrick is no stranger to seeing pets in agony because of fire. We discuss safety issues and also some of the effects you and your pet can suffer from when trapped in a fire. PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!!!
