Hour 1 – Dean Potter is one of the world’s most renowned rock climbers, adventurers, and nature enthusiasts who leaps off of cliffs and mountains while wearing a special “wingsuit” that enables him to soar like a bird before deploying a parachute to land. Now, Dean’s latest adventure, leaping off of Canada’s Mount Butte, a 9000 foot granite wall on the Pacific coast…after climbing it of course, and National Geographic Channel’s Explorer has covered it all. Dean joins Jeff to talk about this adventure and what he had to do to prepare for it. Also Dr. Patrick Mahaney joins Jeff to talk about a severely abused Pittbull and how it was nursed back to health but the story does not stop there! Now entities are fighting over the Intellectual property rights of the dog…where does the greed end UNBELIEVABLE! Also product review of Earth Heart Inc.’s “Canine Calm.”

Hour 2 – The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show was this past week on Monday and Tuesday. Cindy Vogels was chosen to be the “Best in Show” judge for this historic event and Jeff had the chance to speak to Cindy about this honor and her background at the annual press conference call. TV host and friend of the My Buddy Butch Show David Frei also attended the call and Jeff had the opportunity to speak with him also and stirred up an unintended hornet’s nest! Jeff gives a rundown on the finalists, the AKC definition of the seven groups, and a congrats to the winner!

ALRIGHT! We’re Back in the Saddle Again! After a rough week of a bad chest cold and not being able to talk we’re back! Love the warm weather…forgot about the spring bloom that seems to be aggrivating allergies more every year. I don’t recall being allergic to the various blooming plants and tree pollen but I guess everyone changes as we all get a little older every year! Anyway, great to catch up this week and take in the requests from around the countryfor our new syndicated daily feature. Thanks to all of the radio stations around the country that are interested and all the email!

fostering and the requirements of these two active breeds of dogs! The Cocker Spaniel is from the Sporting Group and the Siberian Husky is from the Working Group according to the AKC Guidelines for dog breeds so you have to know that these dogs are active! It’s because of the different traits for different breeds that we like to talk about the needs of the particular breed(s) so people will know what they are getting into if they are interested in adopting. It’s important for everyone to know what their potetial new best friend needs to be happy and healthy!

This week we discuss the happenings at Westminster. It was great to be in New York working again to see some old freinds and meet some new ones! This has always been a great event and this, being my second year, was no exception. As people are always willing to talk about their pets, few are as knowledgable as those that show their breeds at dog shows. I have learned much about many types of dogs from those who have owned them for many years and I talk to a few of those that I met this year at Madison Square Garden. Take a listen and maybe you might be interested in a couple day trip next year for Valentine’s Day!

Rescue a Doberman!

Donald Helfrisch joined us from the Doberman Rescue of New Mexico for our Rescue of the Week segment. Doberman’s are a great breed and were very well represented at Westminster this year but this misunderstood breed often gets a bad rap. Don, as a long time owner of Dobermans, gives us the inside scoop on what this type of dog is all about and also what their rescue organization is up to in New Mexico. "8 State Hurricane Kate" and the New "Not Without My Dog"

Animal Allies of Texas!

Dusty Rainbolt runs the adoption center in Highland Village, Texas and the center is based out of Garland. They help both dogs and cats, but since Dusty is a cat expert I thought we would focus on helping the cats this week. Dusty also talks about the “Phoenix Project” which has recently been established in which AAT has partnered with the local battered womens shelter to provide temporary housing for pets of women seeking escape from an abusive relationship. RUFUS - 2006 Westminster Best in Show!

Sometimes my mouth speaks faster than my brain is working! Must be the snow or the activity getting ready for Westminster but at the top of the show, after reading through a list of four Barbara’s one Bonnie and one Betty, I mentioned Rufus’ owner as Barbara Babikian. It’s actually Barbara Bishop and as David and I were talking I realized my mistake when he correctly mention Barb Bishop as Rufus’ Owner! I suppose I should read my schedule rather than trying to procede by memory! Anyway my apologies for the mixup. BARBARA BISHOP was kind enough to drop by and talk to us as an owner of a past Westminster Winner of Best in Show - RUFUS! Barbara’s passion for the Bull terrier breed is quite evident as she discusses the breed standard and how the responsible breeders are trying to breed out the “sharpness” or “aggressiveness” of the breed. She also mentions how some feel that breeders are doing a disservice to the Bull Terrier breed by doing this and that RUFUS is not a good representative because he lacks this aggressive quality. Well, as a HUGE fan of the Bullys (and RUFUS) myself, I think that is absolutely ridiculous and completely undefensable so I’ll tell those who feel this way that when one of the noted “Aggressive” Bull Terriers wins as many Best in Breeds as RUFUS has, and then Westminster on top of it, only then will I entertain that thought! Obviously the judges of the most prestigious shows in the world feel that RUFUS’ temperment is perfect! Barbara has done it right and continues her love for the breed in the proper fashion and I salute her! Looking forward to seeing you and RUFUS in New York Barbara!

Vet to the Stars!

This week Dr. Patrick begins his discussion on his research into the past 5 breeds that have won “Best in Show” at Westminster and some of the breed specific ailments that can crop up. The responsible breeders that have dogs entered in Westminster are well aware of these particular problems that can arise in their respective breed and they do much testing and careful selection to try and breed issues out of their lines. These are the most knowledgable people on the planet with regard to their specific breed, which is why we always remind people to not purchase puppy mill dogs and to seek out a reputable rescue organization or breeder for the breed they are interested in. Search for the breed specific clubs which can refer you to a reputable rescue org or breeder in your area. You can do a quick Google Search and find the club for the breed you like or even go to the AKC website. These responsible breeders are more interested in the preservation of the breed standard and breeding healthy dogs than they are breeding for profit. They can help you with any questions you may have during the life of your new addition also!
