Joan Powers of the Colorado Pug Rescue is with us for our rescue segment. From the Westminster press conference Tom Bradley Westminster Show Chairman talks about the new breeds added by the AKC and how it impacts the dog show and also weighs in on Paulo Dondino the Italian judge. Update on Chico the Chihuahua that was attacked by a great Horned Owl in January.… Also News and announcements. Hour 2 – Jeff Catches up with Dr. Patrick Mahaney our “Vet To The Stars” from Hollywood California to discuss the veterinary perspective on dog shows. In addition Dr. Patrick Talks about his trip to NY and Westminster and the Veterinary facilities on site at the Garden. Also Cheryl from the Arizona Beagle Rescue and a quick link and discussion on how snake bites are becoming more of a problem. Dr. Patrick also joins us for our Vet Topic of the Week – Allergies in Pets which we have been talking about the last month. Quick update on the My Buddy Butch Extra and Upcoming appearance.

Have you seen “Sensation?” Do you see the dog on the logo for Westminster above? Of course you do! This is a painting of the dog Sensation who was the mascot for the Westminster Kennel Club in New York! This is a “Pointer” which is a hunting dog and a member of the “sporting” group as defined by the American Kennel Club. Columnist Joanne Anderson is a Metropolitan Dog Club “President’s Award Winner” and writer of the column “Pets, Pets, Pets” that is in a number of newspapers. She currently working to find the original grave site of “ Sensation” the actual pointer that is pictured above which they believe to be in Babylon near the Long Island, New York area. She has written more than 25 articles detailing the search which has had twists and turns that she never would have guessed when she started. Listen in as we talk about her search and if they will even hire a historical psychic to help in the search, as they are looking for a grave from the late 1800’s…very interesting. I want to keep up with this so we’ll have Joanne back and check on the progress! Check out some of Joannes articles on the Search:

This Sanctuary helps animals for life!

Tony Hill, D-Jacksonville, allows “any local government [to place] further restrictions or additional requirements on owners of dangerous dogs.” My Buddy Butch is a very dangerous and deadly dog… to squirrels….

This week we discuss the happenings at Westminster. It was great to be in New York working again to see some old freinds and meet some new ones! This has always been a great event and this, being my second year, was no exception. As people are always willing to talk about their pets, few are as knowledgable as those that show their breeds at dog shows. I have learned much about many types of dogs from those who have owned them for many years and I talk to a few of those that I met this year at Madison Square Garden. Take a listen and maybe you might be interested in a couple day trip next year for Valentine’s Day!

Rescue a Doberman!

Donald Helfrisch joined us from the Doberman Rescue of New Mexico for our Rescue of the Week segment. Doberman’s are a great breed and were very well represented at Westminster this year but this misunderstood breed often gets a bad rap. Don, as a long time owner of Dobermans, gives us the inside scoop on what this type of dog is all about and also what their rescue organization is up to in New Mexico. Animal Allies of Texas!

Dusty Rainbolt runs the adoption center in Highland Village, Texas and the center is based out of Garland. They help both dogs and cats, but since Dusty is a cat expert I thought we would focus on helping the cats this week. Dusty also talks about the “Phoenix Project” which has recently been established in which AAT has partnered with the local battered womens shelter to provide temporary housing for pets of women seeking escape from an abusive relationship. RUFUS - 2006 Westminster Best in Show!

Sometimes my mouth speaks faster than my brain is working! Must be the snow or the activity getting ready for Westminster but at the top of the show, after reading through a list of four Barbara’s one Bonnie and one Betty, I mentioned Rufus’ owner as Barbara Babikian. It’s actually Barbara Bishop and as David and I were talking I realized my mistake when he correctly mention Barb Bishop as Rufus’ Owner! I suppose I should read my schedule rather than trying to procede by memory! Anyway my apologies for the mixup. BARBARA BISHOP was kind enough to drop by and talk to us as an owner of a past Westminster Winner of Best in Show - RUFUS! Barbara’s passion for the Bull terrier breed is quite evident as she discusses the breed standard and how the responsible breeders are trying to breed out the “sharpness” or “aggressiveness” of the breed. She also mentions how some feel that breeders are doing a disservice to the Bull Terrier breed by doing this and that RUFUS is not a good representative because he lacks this aggressive quality. Well, as a HUGE fan of the Bullys (and RUFUS) myself, I think that is absolutely ridiculous and completely undefensable so I’ll tell those who feel this way that when one of the noted “Aggressive” Bull Terriers wins as many Best in Breeds as RUFUS has, and then Westminster on top of it, only then will I entertain that thought! Obviously the judges of the most prestigious shows in the world feel that RUFUS’ temperment is perfect! Barbara has done it right and continues her love for the breed in the proper fashion and I salute her! Looking forward to seeing you and RUFUS in New York Barbara!

VET TOPIC OF THE WEEK

Vet to the Stars!

This week Dr. Patrick begins his discussion on his research into the past 5 breeds that have won “Best in Show” at Westminster and some of the breed specific ailments that can crop up. The responsible breeders that have dogs entered in Westminster are well aware of these particular problems that can arise in their respective breed and they do much testing and careful selection to try and breed issues out of their lines. These are the most knowledgable people on the planet with regard to their specific breed, which is why we always remind people to not purchase puppy mill dogs and to seek out a reputable rescue organization or breeder for the breed they are interested in. Search for the breed specific clubs which can refer you to a reputable rescue org or breeder in your area. You can do a quick Google Search and find the club for the breed you like or even go to the AKC website. These responsible breeders are more interested in the preservation of the breed standard and breeding healthy dogs than they are breeding for profit. They can help you with any questions you may have during the life of your new addition also!

Your Host David Frei of the Westminster Kennel Club-134th Annual Dog Show Feb. 15th and 16th.

David Frei has been a friend of the show since we covered our first dog show back in 2008. It’s always a pleasure to talk with David about his passion which is his love for Dogs. I learn something new from him everytime we speak and our conversation was no exception on this show. David has been involved with the show for 21 years and he shares with us the current business surrounding Westminster for this Tournament of Champions, The 2010 Westminster Kennel Club Dog show. The show is February 15th and 16th at Madison Square Garden and will be televised on USA Network and CNBC. I also want to send our sympathy to David and his wife as they lost two furry members of their family last summer Belle and Ty. As we all know, it’s difficult to lose a companion that has been with you for so many years. All the best from us at My Buddy Butch and see you in New York David!

ALL antifreeze is LETHAL to your Pet!

Sam Martin of Prestone joined us to talk about the safety aspects of antifreeze! We all have it, hopefully in the engine and not on the floor. Always check under your car for puddles and spills. DId you know that Prestone partnered with the ASPCA many years ago to get the word out to pet owners on the hazards of antifreeze? Last week in The My Buddy Butch Chronicle I wrote about changing the thermostat in my truck…what a mess I made with antifreeze on the floor! Cleaned it up pretty good so Butch wouldn’t get into itbut thought it was a good idea to throw the reminder out there. Sam is also a dog lover AND a rescuer! Thanks Sam for taking the time to be with us! I’ve been using Prestone for 30 years and always will!

Vet to the Stars!

This week Dr. Patrick talks to us about “Stump.” Stump was the 2009 Westminster Champion Sussex Spaniel. He was not only the oldest dog to ever win Westminster but did you know that he almost died a few years ago from a bizzar bacterial infection? Dr. Patrick talks about this and we also get into a long discussion on Vaccines. After a ripple I caused with my last “Chronicle” by mentioning booster shot vaccinations, I think it’s time to spend a little more time incvestigating this issue from the pro/con standpoint and make a decision on how I will handle Butch’s future!

Dr. Nancy KayDr. Nancy Kay is a great freind of the My Buddy Butch Show and she has been with us in the past for a few shows sharing tips from her book “Speaking for Spot.” This is a great one stop shop for information on how to take the best care of your dog and how to work with your Veterinarian for your pets benenfit. I keep this book handy and it has answered many questions I had while taking care of Butch in the last year! Great for new and expert dog parents alike. Dr. Nancy joined us to talk about her first hand experience with puppy mills. Often a sad ending and heartbreaking experience, as a Veterinarian, Dr. Nancy sees too much of this going on and she shares a story of a sweet little Boston Terrier that had to be put down because of a genetic defect that just could not be repaired by surgery. If you are planning on a new furry addition to your family you should listen to this conversation!

Award-winning author Connie Gotsch’s novel, Belle’s Star is written from a dog’s point of view. The story follows Belle, a young dog who has never met a kind human, as she is rescued by a young girl named Darcy. Belle is terrified, but other dogs and a cat teach Belle about trust, and she learns how to face the painful issues around her.
It was great to speak with Connie about this book because it centers around a theme that can help kids deal with abuse and perhaps teach them to trust and that not all people are cruel. It also can teach them how to care for another person and even a pet!

Stacy Thomas Director of PR for the Chicago Canine Rescue dropped in to talk about their organization. Once you get started it takes a lot of heart to keep up the great work and they have done just that!. Beginning in 2001 they have grown to have their own facility with the help from many volunteers and donations. If you are around the Chicagoland area please look them and if you are not ready to adopt see if you can volunteer to help out and keep off some of the Winter pounds! You can always help find homes for these deserving pets. Check out their web site!

Vet to the Stars!

This week Dr. Patrick talks to us about “Bedroom Safety for your pet!” Really… what possibly could be a problem in my bedroom? Well, Dr. Patrick has seen many instances where things laying around the bedroom have ended up in pet’s stomach. Listen in on what he has pulled out of a pet stomach you won’t believe it!

Also last week Dr. Patrick gave us a first hand look at a pet that suffered burns and how he is treating it. He has provided pictures but be warned they are graphic. Budda is a sweet little French Bulldog that suffered burns and is now going through treatments to help him heal. I wanted to keep this up again this week because it is important to keep your pet from under your car…and this is one of many reasons why!

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of those affected by the devastating earthquake in Haiti. As there are so many places that have aid stations and donation acceptance set up, it would be redundant for us to attempt such an activity. Please consider donating at a TRUSTED location such as your local Red Cross or inquire at your local radio or TV station for a good place to donate. Many service providers are making it easy to donate even by texting a message.

Well, now that our snow is starting to melt from a few days in the high 30’s the only memory I’ll have of it is a sprained back from too much shoveling! We’re not out of the woods yet as most of us here in Ohio and the Great Lake state know we could be dealing with the white stuff well into April or even May if conditions are right! I hope conditions are wrong! On with the show…

What would you do? Mine - a must see film!

Jessie Pullins did not expect to leave his long time friend and companion behind as he evacuated his large family in two vehicles to Houston as the water rose in New Orleans. 2 vehicles packed with too many people setting out on a 75 mile drive which took 12 hours to Houston would be too much for the large black lab. Leaving plenty of food and water for “JJ” Jessie knew he would return in 2 or 3 days to get JJ and reunite him with the family. It was not to be as authorities would not let anyone back in to their homes much less the city for months. Jessie discusses the heartwrenching ordeal he went through to find JJ and the legal issues that appeared during his quest.

This week Dr. Patrick talks to us about burns that your pet can recieve from many different locations. Butch has a tendancy to want to walk under my truck in the garage right after we get out. The exhaust pipe and radiator and surrounding metal is still scalding HOT. Now my truck rides pretty high and Butch can almost stand up underneath but if he does it in the wrong place he will cook the hair and skin where he touches the hot metal. My Buddy Butch Show #26 – WESTMINSTER Part 1

TAAAA DAAAAAA! More technical issues with our feed! Well we were able to get 45 Minutes in before things pooped out on us…probably due to the massive power outages and lines down from the 70 and 80MPH winds that ripped through last night. SOOOO Next week we will extend the show 30 minutes to get the rest of the WESTMINSTER interviews in and we will even have an inventor of a new pet product in between! SORRY again for the delay but these things happen!

Â What an outstanding 4 days in New York. As soon as I hit the ground we were off and running. Check out this week’s show for all the details on the Westminster trip. From meeting collegues and new friends at the SkyBark Fashion Show/Party Friday nightÂ Â to theÂ Pet Writer’s conference on SaturdayÂ to the fantastic dinner at the DWAA Awards show Sunday, there was plenty to tell you during this show. I met up with David Frei for a breif conversation and of course how could we forget the DOG SHOW! THis is truely the “SUPERBOWL” of dog shows everywhere and they really know how to do it in New York. I even had the honor of sitting next to a good friend of the My Buddy Butch Talk Show, Animal First Aid and CPR expert Denise Fleck of SunnyDogInk.com.
