Jeff takes some time to relay a story from a fourth of July when Butch was only a couple of years old that almost ended in a tragic loss. He wants you to learn from his mistakes in not knowing as much as he thought he did about Butch. Dr. Jennifer Jellison has been on Regis and Kelly, The Today Show and Good Morning America on many occasions and now she is opening her new veterinary practice in Ohio. Jeff shares another summer story about Butch that proves a little training can definitely prevent a tragedy but it takes repetition and perseverance. Alison has been a friend of the show for a couple of years when her previous book “City Dog ” was released. Both Enjoyable reads for this summer! Karen Everhardt is the Executive director of Rainbow Meadows Equine Rescue and Retirement facility in Kansas. She joins us to talk about how this wonderful facility started and what it takes to keep and equine rescue and sanctuary going on a daily basis. Babesiosis… have you heard of this? Well it’s just one more of the infectious gifts that ticks can transmit to YOU AND YOUR PET! Dianne Sawyer reported on this on ABC News and Jeff takes a look at this disease that can actually be fatal for up to 20% of the people who catch this!
This week – Neurologist and professor at the University of Pittsburgh Dr. Dawn Marcus is back with us to talk about the release of her new book “The Power of Wagging Tails.” Therapy dogs are doing unbelievable work helping people cope with various ailments and now Dr. Marcus is doing a study of the use of therapy dogs in waiting rooms. She also talks about how your dog could possibly make a great therapy dog. Dr. Patrick Mahaney is with us for the 4th part of the series about his visit to Peru…exotic animals a three toed sloth. Dr. Marcus also hangs around to talk about how exposing your baby to pets can help them avoid allergies later in life. She has been involved with many studies regarding this. Well he will tell us. Summer heat is upon us and Jeff gives a few reminders about the heat and some of the tell “tail” signs he has already seen with Butch on how the heat takes its toll. Horse Virus Herpes-1 spreading in western states closed Horse Competitions across the country to curtail this serious problem also Letter Carriers, and Meter readers for the Gas and Electric Companies are out and around our homes. Also Joan Powers of the Colorado Pug Rescue checks in to talk about “Preloved-Auction” and how this format is helping rescues to save Pugs as far away as England. Dr. Patrick Mahaney our Vet to the Stars drops in to continue his series on his trip to Peru. Ever heard of a “BOT FLY?” well he will tell all about it and if we have to worry here in the USA.
